SEATTLE, Wash. - Senior libero Melissa Mulick (Gaston, Ore.) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team, while junior outside hitter Nikole Thompson (Marysville, Wash.) and sophomore middle blocker Jenny Burrows (Reno, Nev.) earned spots on the Academic All-District Second Team, announced Thursday by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
These three student-athletes competed against their peers in the College Division of District VIII, which encompasses Division II and III schools as well as NAIA institutions in California, Oregon, Washington, Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Utah, British Columbia, and Yukon. Mulick will now appear on the ballot for the Academic All-America Team, to be announced later this month.
This season Mulick has shown what a true student-athlete can accomplish, picking up accolades for her performances both on the court and in the classroom. Earlier this week, she earned a spot on the All-GNAC Second Team after breaking the school record for digs in a season with 637 digs, second in the conference and sixth in Division II. For the third consecutive year, she was named to the GNAC Academic All-Conference Team, posting a 3.92 grade point average while majoring in accounting.
Thompson was also voted Second Team All-GNAC this season after leading the Redhawks with 345 kills and also contributing 31 service aces and 273 defensive digs. She was named GNAC Player of the Week twice this season and earned her first GNAC Academic All-Conference honor this year, carrying a 3.38 grade point average while majoring in psychology.
Burrows, a visual arts major with a 3.83 grade point average, also earned a spot on the GNAC Academic All-Conference Team this season. She finished the year with 116 kills, 16 service aces, 74 digs, and 59 total blocks. Burrows set a school record for highest hitting percentage in a match, hitting at a .722 clip against Adams State on Sept. 1.
The Seattle University volleyball team finished the regular season with an 18-9 overall record, including a 9-7 conference record that placed the Redhawks in a tie for fourth place in the GNAC standings.
