George Mathews

George has a very long history as a throws coach and is still 
an actively competing in high level Masters competitions 
around the world as well in the United States. He has been 
very active in teaching the hammer and weight throw to
many athletes who have won scholarships and excelled at 
the college level. They include Jayden White from Everett 
High School who was a 6 time All American at The University 
of Washington and who holds the school record in the 
weight throw. Joe Ellis from Eastlake High School was a 5 
time All American at The University of Michigan and is the 
school record holder in the hammer throw.

George has over 12 years coaching experience as a throws
coach at several schools in Washington and Idaho where he 
has developed several state champions in the discus and 
shot put.

Coach Mathews is a long-time private coach in all the all the 
throws with emphasis on the hammer and weight throw. He 
built and maintains the only public hammer throwing facility 
in this part of the United States at West Seattle Stadium.
He has also coached and participated in many throws 
clinics around the United States including the prestigious
Iron Wood Throwers Camp where he coached with and was 
coached by America’s only Olympic Gold Medal Hammer 
thrower since 1916, Harold Connolly.

George has competed in 21 World Masters Championships 
on 5 continents winning 6 world championships and 
collecting 21 medals. He has won over 75 USA Track & Field 
Masters National Championships in all the throws and is a 
Member of the USATF Masters Track& Field Hall of Fame. He 
has broken many American throws records having just 
broken last year the M80 age American record for the 25 
pound indoor weight throw and still holds the M65 American 
and World record for the indoor 20 pound weight since 2009.
George is from Long Island New York and went to St Agnes 
Cathedral High School was a scholarship student athlete at 
St John’s University in Queens New York. He was the school 
record holder in the hammer throw and won many 
championships including the Penn Relays hammer throw.
