CHENEY, Wash. - The Seattle University women's tennis team started its fall schedule this week, facing off against Eastern Washington in a showcase tournament as a chance for both teams to hone in their lineups before the official spring tournament schedule.
Fifth year Montserrat Sierra was a major highlight for the Redhawks, going undefeated while competing in both the top doubles pairing and singles spot both days. The first day of doubles, she paired with senior Daria Nazarenko, taking down their opponents, 8-3. She teamed up with freshman Aleksandra Toneva the second day, winning a close 8-7 (8-6) match. In singles, she handled her opponents with ease, winning 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 the first day and dominated 7-5, 6-1 the second.
Freshman Kristina Vasileva also won her singles match on day one, grinding out a hard-fought victory against her opponent 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5) in her first collegiate singles duel.
Seattle U was found success in singles on day two, with two additional Redhawks securing victories alongside Sierra. Sierra's doubles partner for the day, Aleksandra Toneva, paired up her first-ever collegiate doubles win with an impressive third-spot singles victory, winning 6-3, 6-4. Alongside her, sophomore Amina Avdic also found singles success, recovering impressively after a tough first set to eventually win out 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Seattle U will now focus on preparing for its first major fall tournament of the three they will compete in this season. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regionals will take place October 8-13 in Stanford, Calif., and Seattle U will compete in both singles and doubles at the tournament.
