SEATTLE - The Seattle University women's tennis team will start the season by heading to Cheney, Wash., to face off against Eastern Washington in a showcase tournament. Being carried out at the EWU Tennis Courts, the competition will take place September 26-27, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday.
Across the two days, Seattle and Eastern Washington will compete in both singles and doubles, with different doubles pairings each day to help hone their skills leading up to their upcoming tournament schedules.
Competing for the Redhawks will be Amina Avdic, Daria Nazarenko, Montserrat Sierra, Maija Tamura, Aleksandra Toneva and Kristina Vasileva.
Sophomore Avdic started her collegiate career with a match win at Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals last fall, and a pair of doubles wins in the spring season.
Senior Nazarenko comes off a season in which she won her singles draw and was a doubles semifinalist at the Gonzaga Invitational in the fall, and was named to the West Coast Conference All-Academic Team as well as named College Sports Communicators Academic All-District.
This begins fifth-year Sierra's first season at Seattle, following four years at the University of Dayton in which she racked up eight singles and doubles wins apiece, and had over nine wins against Universal Tennis Rating-ranked opponents.
This will be junior Tamura's second season on the tennis team, following a freshman year on the rowing team.
Freshman Toneva had an incredibly successful high school career in Norway, including a third place finish at the Norwegian Indoors Senior Championship, reached the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles at the Norwegian Junior Championship, as well as several other top-three finishes in Grand Prix tournaments.
Freshman Vasileva also made a showing in high school, earning second place in the 2025-26 Bulgaria U18 National Ranking, was the U18 Doubles National Champion, and was a five-time doubles semifinalist in ITF Tournaments.
