SEATTLE - Seattle University softball (19-27, 5-8 WCC) took Santa Clara (23-23, 8-5 WCC) to an extended contest that surpassed 2.5 hours but could not erase the early deficit, falling 7-2 at Logan Field on Friday evening.
Junior Avari Morris and freshman Aurora Zepeda each logged multiple hits in the contest, with Morris leading the team with two hits and a RBI. Zepeda also recorded two hits in three at bats. Sophomore Abbie Fales tallied the final of SU’s five hits. Senior Brooklyn Jones scored each of SU’s two runs.
Guiding the Redhawk defense was Zepeda, who grabbed five putouts. Morris and graduate Jay Ross followed up with four putouts between left field and first base respectively.
Junior Berkley Vance earned the start in the circle and pitched 4.0 innings of the contest. Morris pitched 2.0 innings while facing seven batters and striking out three. Junior Ellie Bostedt tossed the final 1.0 innings.
Santa Clara struck first in the opening frame, scoring a run off an RBI single. SU put two runners on in the first off a hit from Morris and a walk for Ross, but could not draw in the tying or go-ahead run. After leaving two Broncos stranded, the Redhawks went of the offensive in the bottom of the second as SU loaded the bases with two singles and a hit by pitch. Facing one out, Morris delivered the game tying run with a RBI single to score Jones from third to even the game 1-1 at the end of two innings.
The Broncos responded with five runs between the third and fourth innings to lead 6-1 through the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the Redhawks got three runners on following a hit by pitch, a walk and a base hit facing no outs. Ross earned the RBI on as Jones scored on the grounder to third base to pull within four runs.
Neither team would score between the fifth and sixth frames before the Broncos tallied their final run of the evening with a solo shot homer out of right field to take game one 7-2.
