CORVALLIS, Ore. - Seattle University softball (19-26, 5-7 WCC) was orchestrating its third straight comeback, holding the one run advantage late into the series finale against Oregon State (19-31, 7-8 WCC), but the Beavers would not be denied on their senior day, taking the contest from the Redhawks 8-6 at Kelly Field on Sunday afternoon.
Graduate Jay Ross led the team with three hits, including her first home run in a Redhawk uniform. Ross scored two runs and accounted for 2 RBI on her homer. On the defensive end, she recorded three putouts from first base.
Senior Ava Sin and freshman Aurora Zepeda also went for multi-hit performances, each recording. Zepeda logged two base hits while Sin also accounted for two hits, including one RBI double. The pair each tallied a run in the contest.
Junior Avari Morris, junior Sophia Kissling, junior Karen Spadafora and senior Taylor Fitch rounded out the group with at least one hit in the game. Morris and Zepeda each led the defense with four putouts.
Earning the start in the circle was junior Berkley Vance. She pitched 2.2 innings of the game where she faced 16 batters. Sophomore Maya Mesa also logged 2.2 innings pitched. Mesa faced 13 batters and led all pitchers with two strikeouts. Freshman Kaia Galaviz closed out the game for 0.2 innings pitched.
The Redhawks recorded their 22nd game with 10+ hits, combining for 11 on the day.
Seattle U got on base early in the day, recording two base hits in the top of the first while keeping Oregon State scoreless in the process. The Beavers took the lead in the bottom of the second with a grand slam in the bottom of the second.
The Redhawks responded with a three run inning in the top of the third, leading off with back to back singles from Morris and Ross. With two runners on, Sin recorded her RBI double to score Morris from second. A pair of OSU errors led to two more runs, to make it a one run game heading into the bottom of the third.
The Beavers came back with a solo shot homer in the third to lead 5-3 into the fourth. Zepeda began the response in the top of the fourth with a base hit and Kissling followed suit with a single before stealing second. With outs to play with, Morris scored Zepeda from third with a RBI sac fly. Ross scored Kissling with her first home run of the season to give Seattle U its first lead of the contest. Mesa kept the momentum from the circle, leading a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth, until the Beavers took back the lead in the bottom of the sixth with their third home run of the day. SU got a runner on after a single from Spadafora but could not keep the game alive, falling 8-6.
Seattle U returns to action on Friday, May 1 to start the three game series against Santa Clara for senior weekend.
