SEATTLE - One run was the decider as Seattle University softball (18-22, 4-3 WCC) found itself in another tight WCC contest, narrowly falling to LMU (26-15, 3-4 WCC) 2-1 in eight innings at Logan Field on Friday evening.
Junior Avari Morris led the team with two hits for her fifth straight game with at least one hit, while recording her third triple of the season. Morris scored the lone run for SU in the bottom of the third while picking up three put outs from left field.
Freshman Aurora Zepeda matched Morris with two hits to tie her season high. Zepeda locked down the second and third base path in her second straight start, collecting a new career high three assists at short stop.
Senior Ava Sin recorded the second extra base hit of the evening for her 15th double of the year. Graduate Jay Ross recorded the lone RBI off her single to score Morris. Ross led the team with eight putouts at first.
Junior Berkley Vance led from the circle, tossing all 8.0 innings of the contest, a new season high. Vance faced 34 batters and struck out two, while allowing only one earned run.
The Redhawks out hit the Lions 6-5, but fell after conceding three errors to LMU’s zero. SU is now 5-7 in games when it commits two or more errors, while its opponents move to 12-8 over SU when they have no errors.
The Redhawks earned the first base hit in the bottom of the second off a single from Zepeda, but could not drive in the freshman shortstop. Vance commanded the top of the third with her second strikeout, leaving the Lions with one runner on.
Morris led off the bottom of the third with her triple before Ross scored her with an RBI single down the left field line. Neither team scored or reached base after trading 1-2-3 innings in the fifth. LMU broke through to tie the contest with a solo home run, forcing extras after tagging Zepeda out at home in the bottom of the seventh off the Morris single.
Facing two outs, the Lions scored the go-ahead run off a Redhawk error before icing the contest 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth.
Seattle U returns to action on Saturday for Bark in the Park, hosting LMU at 2 PM.
