SEATTLE - Seattle University softball (17-21, 3-2 WCC) put runners on the corners late in game two against Saint Mary’s (29-11, 5-0 WCC) but could not drive in the game tying run to extend the contest, falling 2-1 to the Gaels at Logan Field on Saturday evening.

Senior Brooklyn Jones led the Redhawks with two hits in the contest, while graduate Jay Ross orchestrated the lone run of the game for Seattle. Ross scored senior Ava Sin off an RBI double, the lone hit for extra bases for the Redhawks. Sin also recorded a hit in the contest, along with juniors Avari Morris and Mikee Morris.

The Redhawks out-hit the Gaels 6-5 after recording only one base hit in game one of the series.

Avari Morris earned the start from the circle, tossing 5.0 innings of the game. Morris faced 23 batters and struck out two, allowing five hits and one earned run. Freshman Kaia Galaviz pitched the remaining 2.0 innings. Galaviz faced six batters and struck out three without conceding a hit or a run.

Aiding the defense was junior Karen Spadafora and Ross, who combined for ten putouts. Mikee Morris led the team with two assists between the second and third base path.

Avari Morris led off the day, guiding a three up, three down top of the first before recording the first base hit of the contest in the bottom of the first. Morris recorded her fourth stolen base of the year, but the Redhawks could not draw her in from scoring position.

The Gaels broke through first in the top of the second, scoring off an RBI double before the Redhawk infield stranded two runners. Sophomore Abbie Fales reached first after drawing a walk to get another runner on for SU, but the Gaels disrupted the tie from the out field.

Morris conceded one hit in the top of the third, but kept Saint Mary’s scoreless in the third frame as Mikee Morris and Spadafora caught the lead off runner stealing. Sin got on board in the bottom of the fourth off a base hit with one out before Ross stepped up to the plate. Facing two outs, Ross scored Sin from first with her RBI double to level the contest 1-all entering the fifth.

The Gaels responded with another RBI double in the top of the fifth to take back the narrow lead. Jones got to first with a hit in the bottom of the fifth as freshman Jaeden Sajec entered to run. Back to back ground outs advanced Sajec to third, but the Redhawks were unable to bring her in the 60 feet to tie the game.

Galaviz entered the circle and picked up back to back strikeouts in the sixth as the Redhawks were held scoreless in the bottom of the sixth with a runner in scoring position.

Galaviz guided the Redhawks to a three up, three down in the top of the seventh, picking up her third strikeout of the day. Jones carried the momentum into the bottom of the seventh, grabbing her second hit of the day. She moved to second off a sac bunt from junior Sophia Kissling before advancing to third off the single from Mikee Morris. The Gaels outfield clamped down for the final out to extinguish the Redhawk comeback 2-1.

Seattle U returns to action for the final game of the weekend, hosting the Gaels at noon at Logan Field on Sunday.
