SEATTLE - Seattle University softball (17-20, 3-1 WCC) went toe to toe with the WCC’s other unbeaten in conference team Saint Mary’s (28-11, 4-0 WCC) in a defensive bout, but could not craft the offense needed to remain undefeated at home, falling to the Gaels 2-0 at Logan Field on Friday evening.

Junior Avari Morris was the lone Redhawk to record a base hit against reigning WCC pitcher of the week Odhi Vasquez. Senior Ava Sin was also able to reach base, drawing a walk off Vasquez.

Junior Berkley Vance led the Redhawks from the circle, tossing all 7.0 innings of the contest. Vance faced 29 batters and struck out five. She held the Gaels scoreless in five frames, including the first four.

Aiding the defense was junior Karen Spadafora, who tallied six putouts. Morris recorded five from left field to tie her career high.

The Gaels led off the day with back to back singles before Vance sent two batters swinging to keep Saint Mary’s from scoring. Morris led off the Redhawks with a single up the middle, but Seattle U was also unable to capitalize.

Vance led a three up, three down top of the second before Saint Mary’s followed suit. Morris and Vance led the Redhawk defense in the third, forcing another 1-2-3 inning. The SU infield followed up with a third straight three up, three down in the top of the fourth before Sin was walked to get SU’s second runner of the day on base. Saint Mary’s kept the game knotted 0-0 after four innings.

The Gaels broke through in the top of the fifth with a bases loaded sac fly. The Redhawks immediately responded, turning a double play to keep the damage to one run. Saint Mary’s got its final run of the game in the top of the sixth facing two outs, securing the victory over Seattle U with the final three outs in the seventh.

The Redhawks return to action tomorrow afternoon, with a new start time for Saturday’s game. Due to weather conditions in the area, Saturday will now have a 4:00 PM start with the alumni tailgate set for 3:00 PM.
