LAS VEGASIt was a night of milestones for Seattle University men’s basketball.

The Redhawks earned their 20th victory of the season, secured the program’s first West Coast Conference Championship win and gave Head Coach Victor his 100th career win at Seattle U with a hard-fought 58-56 victory over San Diego on Friday night at Orleans Arena.

The win marks the fourth 20-win season for the Redhawks in the past five years and advances the seventh-seeded Redhawks into the third round of the Credit Union 1 WCC Championship where they will face sixth-seed Pacific.

Seattle U (20-12) had to earn every bit of it.

San Diego controlled much of the first half, shooting 52% from the field including five threes to take a 35-30 lead into the break. The Toreros pushed the margin to eight early in the second half before the Redhawks began to turn the tide defensively.

A three-pointer from Jojo Murphy midway through the second half tied the game at 40-40 and ignited a key Seattle U run. Will Heimbrodt then delivered in the paint, converting a three-point play to push the Redhawks ahead by eight with just over six minutes to play.

San Diego refused to go away. A three-pointer by Juanse Gorosito tied the game at 54-54 with just over four minutes remaining.

Heimbrodt calmly knocked down two free throws with 2:33 remaining to put Seattle U back in front before Austin Maurer drove for a layup with 1:43 left that proved to be the decisive basket.

The Redhawks then leaned on their defense to close it out, holding the Toreros scoreless over the final two minutes. San Diego (12-21) had multiple opportunities in the final seconds after securing offensive rebounds, but Seattle U held firm as the buzzer sounded.

Heimbrodt led the Redhawks with 16 points and nine rebounds, pacing a Seattle U effort that dominated the paint throughout the night. Murphy added 12 points and five assists, while Junseok Yeo chipped in eight points.

Seattle U finished with a 36-12 advantage in points in the paint and held San Diego to just 26 percent shooting in the second half to seal the victory.

The Redhawks and Tigers will face off Saturday, March 7 at 8:30 p.m. PT on ESPN+.
