OMAHA, Neb. - Seattle University softball (14-18) led early and outhit Creighton (17-18) for the second straight day but could not pull off the comeback, falling 11-8 to the Bluejays inside Creighton Softball Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Junior Avari Morris led the team with three hits in four at bats, with one hit going for extra bases. Graduate Jay Ross matched Morris with three hits, matching her career high. Two other Redhawks secured multiple hits on the day.
Juniors Mikee Morris and Karen Spadafora each recorded two hits, including home runs. Morris led the team with two runs scored on the day, while Spadafora led the team with two RBI. She matched senior Ava Sin and Avari Morris with 2 RBI.
Spadafora and senior Taylor Fitch led the defense with a combined eight putouts. Fitch, Mikee Morris and Spadafora each had an assist.
Guiding from the circle was Morris, who earned the start. She pitched 1.2 innings and faced 12 batters. Freshman Kaia Galaviz pitched the bulk of the contest with 2.2 innings of work. Galaviz also faced 12 batters and struck out four.
The Redhawks kicked off the day defensively, forcing a three up, three down inning in the first. The offense responded in the top of the second, with Ross leading off with a single. Spadafora sent out her homer to score Ross to take the 2-0 lead. After sophomore Abbie Fales was walked, the outfielder stole second to put another runner in scoring position. Junior Sophia Kissling singled and Mikee Morris reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases with one out for Avari Morris. Avari scored Fales with a single while Fitch earned the RBI for the sac fly to score Kissling. SU led 4-0 into the middle of the second.
Creighton responded with a bases loaded situation of its own, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second to take the lead by two runs. The Bluejays tacked on five more runs between the third and fifth innings to lead by as many as seven. Galaviz tallied two strikeouts in that time span.
Mikee Morris led the Redhawks in the sixth, opening the inning with a single. Avari Morris followed suit with her RBI double before Fitch got to first with a base hit. Sin scored both Morris and Fitch with her 2 RBI double before the Bluejays clamped down the offensive Redhawk surge. Galaviz carried the momentum into the bottom of the sixth, striking out two Creighton batters.
Facing two outs in the top of the seventh and trailing by seven, Mikee Morris delivered a solo shot homer to bring the Redhawks within three. Avari Morris got on board with a walk but the Redhawks could not keep the comeback alive, falling to Creighton 11-8.
Seattle U concludes its three game series against Creighton tomorrow morning, with the game slated for 7:30 AM PT.
