POCATELLO, Idaho - Seattle University softball (14-13) entered another defensive battle with Idaho State (23-13) but could not edge out the Bengals in the series finale, falling 9-1 in five innings on Sunday afternoon.

Three Redhawks tallied hits on the day with sophomore Maya Mesa leading the group with her first collegiate hit and run scored. Senior Ava Sin and junior Mikee Morris rounded out the trio with base hits. Morris and Mesa each accounted for stolen bases.

Guiding SU from the circle and earning the start was Mesa, who pitched 3.0 innings of the contest. She faced 19 Bengals and struck out a new career high four batters. Junior Ellie Bostedt pitched the remaining 1.0 innings and faced six batters while striking out two.

Aiding the defense was junior Karen Spadafora who paced the team with six putouts. Graduate Jay Ross added three from first base while sophomore Abbie Fales picked up two from right field. Mesa, Morris and senior Taylor Fitch all tallied an assist in the contest.

After sending down the first three Bengal batters, including back-to-back strikeouts, Idaho State burst through the early tie first with a five run inning in the bottom of the second. SU responded in the top of the third with a pair of singles from Mesa and Morris. With two runners on, both Mesa and Morris advanced for steals, with Mesa coming in for the first run of the day.

Returning to the circle, Mesa tossed another 1-2-3 inning to keep the Bengals from scoring in the bottom of the third, picking up her fourth strikeout of the day. Sin posted her single in the top of the fifth, but the Redhawks could not draw in another score. Idaho State put up an additional four runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 9-1 into the fifth. The Bengals sent down SU’s final three batters to defeat the Redhawks 9-1.
