Brubaker Career Day Bright Spot in San Diego

SAN DIEGO - Graduate Ella Brubaker posted a pair of career feats, surpassing 2,000 career points spanning her six years between the NAIA and Division I levels, while scoring a new DI career high 27 points in Seattle University women’s basketball’s (5-19, 1-12 WCC) 71-54 defeat to San Diego (9-17, 3-10 WCC) inside Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

SAN DIEGO - Graduate Ella Brubaker posted a pair of career feats, surpassing 2,000 career points spanning her six years between the NAIA and Division I levels, while scoring a new DI career high 27 points in Seattle University women’s basketball’s (5-19, 1-12 WCC) 71-54 defeat to San Diego (9-17, 3-10 WCC) inside Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

Brubaker collected her sixth 20+ point performance of the season and second straight 20 point game on the week. She shot 47.1 percent from the field and knocked down a pair of triples to go 50 percent from three point land. Her 27 points was just three shy of tying seventh all-time for points in a single game in SU’s DI era.

The University Place native posted nine free threes on 11 attempts, finishing one free throw shy of tying her DI career high. Brubaker matched her DI career highs on the defensive end, grabbing five steals and eight rebounds on the day, while recording two blocks.

Redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin and graduate Andjela Bigovic combined for 14 points, each connecting for one triple. Bigovic remains perfect on the season from the free throw line after tallying a pair on the afternoon. She grabbed four rebounds and two steals, while Stricklin grabbed two boards, a block and a steal.

Freshman Jana Vesic orchestrated the Redhawk offense with five assists. 

The Redhawks continued their dominance from the free throw line, posting 86.7 percent from the stripe for 13 makes. They forced 23 turnovers, out scoring the Toreros on points off turnovers 14-12. Defensively, SU forced 12 steals to San Diego’s five, while tallying five blocks to USD’s three.

Seattle U came out hot through the opening quarter, scoring 19 points while holding San Diego to 14. The Redhawks combined for 46.7 percent shooting through the first quarter, limiting the Toreros to a 21.1 percent clip from the floor. Brubaker led the Redhawks with six points in the first, while Vesic handed out three assists. 

SU kept up the pressure in the second quarter before San Diego connected from deep to take the narrow 34-33 edge into the break. Brubaker kept up with scoring, knocking down nine points in the second quarter

SU’s offense cooled off in the second half while the Toreros kept up their momentum heading into halftime. Brubaker led the Redhawks in the second half, passing 20 points in the third quarter before closing the final ten minutes with seven points. 

The Redhawks return to action next Saturday, traveling back to California for a rematch against Saint Mary’s in Moraga. Seattle U returns home the week of February 19 to host LMU.
