HONOLULU - Seattle University softball (2-2) recorded a win for the books, downing North Dakota (1-2) 23-7 to shatter the program Division I record for runs scored in day two of the Bank of Hawai’i Paradise Classic. The Redhawks split their contests on the day, narrowly completing the comeback before falling to Pacific (1-1) 8-6 at Rainbow Wahine Stadium.
Senior Ava Day smashed the single game RBI record, tallying nine total in the victory over North Dakota. She tied the program’s single game home run record, while recording three hits in the contest. She broke the previous RBI record by three.
The Redhawks combined for 23 hits, 23 runs and 21 RBI, hitting .523 as a team against the Fighting Hawks en route to the win. They finished two hits shy of tying the program’s DI single game record, now claiming the second highest in SU’s DI history. Of the 12 players that saw at least one at bat, ten of them recorded hits.
Seven Redhawks recorded multiple hits against North Dakota, with junior Avari Morris leading the group with four, a feat that ties the individual single game DI record. She is the 13th Redhawk to have a four hit game, with the last recorded in 2023.
Junior Karen Spadafora tied the single individual game runs record with four to lead all Redhawks against the Fighting Hawks. She is the fourth Redhawk to do so, the last being junior Mikee Morris in 2024.
Sin is the 13th Redhawk to record a two home run game, with senior Taylor Fitch the last to do so in 2024. Fitch scored three runs while recording three hits and 3 RBI. The third baseman went the yard for the first time this season against North Dakota.
Senior Brooklyn Jones went for 4 RBI while collecting three hits, including a double, in four at bats.
Leading the team from the circle and collecting her first collegiate win was freshman Kaia Galaviz. Galaviz pitched 3.0 innings, collecting a strikeout in her first appearance. Avari Morris and junior Ellie Bostedt both appeared for 2.0 innings and collected three strikeouts each, facing 10 batters.
The Redhawks trailed by a run after the first inning before trading leads with the Fighting Hawks in the third. SU trailed by three entering the top of the fifth before the first dam burst. The Redhawks posted eight runs on seven hits to take the 11-6 advantage after holding North Dakota scoreless in the bottom of the fifth. They built up their lead 13-7, only allowing one run in the final two frames before another avalanche of scoring appeared in the top of the seventh
Sin struck first with a 2 RBI homer facing no outs in the top of the seventh, drawing in Spadafora after she recorded her single. Junior Berkley Vance recorded her first collegiate hit with a double. Vance scored off a Jones single as freshman Aurora Zepeda, Morris, Powell and Fitch all followed suit with singles of their own. After Spadafora was walked to keep the bases loaded, Sin returned and launched SU’s first grand slam of the season out to left field.
The Redhawks scored 10 runs in the top of the seventh to clinch the season sweep against North Dakota. Bostedt shut the door, handing out a 1-2-3 innings with two strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.
Seattle U returned soon after for its first meeting against Pacific this season. The pair met for a one off before conference play to provide the first glimpse into WCC play.
Three Redhawks recorded multiple hits against the Tigers with Fitch leading the charge with two hits, two runs and two RBI in three at bats. Both Fitch and Sin recorded homers in the 8-6 loss to Pacific.
Sophomore Maya Mesa led the Redhawks from the circle in her debut, throwing for 4.0 innings. She faced 23 batters and tallied her first two collegiate strikeouts. Galaviz pitched the remaining 3.0 innings and collected a strikeout.
The Tigers and Redhawks traded ties through the first three innings before Pacific jumped out by two in the top of the fourth. Seattle U trailed by three before pulling back within two in the bottom of the sixth and seventh. Freshman Jaeden Sajec scored in the bottom of the sixth off a fielder's choice while Fitch kept the comeback alive in the bottom of the second with her second home run of the day, but the push would fall just short.
Seattle U returns to action tomorrow for its final game of the Bank of Hawai’i Paradise Classic in a rematch against host Hawai’i.
