SEATTLE - Seattle University women’s basketball (5-18, 1-11 WCC) journeys to its West Coast Conference book end San Diego (8-17, 2-10 WCC) for its second meeting with the Toreros this season, squaring off inside Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
Graduate Ella Brubaker leads the Redhawks in scoring on the season, averaging 15.2 points per game. Brubaker comes off her fifth 20+ point performance of the season and now sits one point shy of 2,000 career points spanning her six years of collegiate basketball between the NAIA and Division I levels. The graduate guard is shooting 43.6 percent from the field and leads the team in free throw shooting, hitting 83.8 percent from the stripe, a mark that ranks fourth in the WCC.
On the defensive end, Brubaker averages 4.3 rebounds per game while leading the team in steals, picking up 1.5 a contest. She ranks top-15 in the WCC in steals, tallying 34 on the year.
Redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin also averages double digit scoring for the Redhawks on the year, posting 10.8 PPG off 41.9 percent shooting from the field. Stricklin leads the Redhawks from behind the arc, connecting for a 37.1 shooting clip from three. She ranks 10th in the WCC in rebounds per game, picking up 5.7 a contest. She leads the Redhawks with 126 rebounds on the year.
Freshman Jana Vesic orchestrates the Redhawk offense, handing out 2.7 assists per game. She ranks 16th in the conference in assists per game, totaling 62 this season. Vesic adds 8.1 points per game shooting 37.7 percent from the field.
Graduate Andjela Bigovic leads the team with 11 blocks this season, she ranks top-20 in the conference in blocks.
The Redhawks are shooting 38.4 percent on the season, recording 521 made field goals on the year, including 132 triples. Seattle U ranks first in the conference in free throw percentage, combining for 79.7 shooting from the stripe. The Redhawks rank 9th in the nation in free throw percentage.
SU records 34.2 rebounds, 6.7 steals and 2.8 blocks a contest, while ranking seventh in the conference in blocks per game.
Saturday’s meeting is the eighth between Seattle U and San Diego dating back to 2010. The Redhawks collected their second program win over the Toreros at the turn of the new year, defeating San Diego 68-62 inside the Redhawk Center. San Diego holds the series edge 5-2 and a 3-0 record at home over the Redhawks.
Since the pair last met, the Toreros have collected two wins in conference play, defeating both Pepperdine and LMU at home. San Diego narrowly fell to Washington State on Thursday night, now holding a 7-5 record at home.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks get a week off before returning for another game against Saint Mary’s, traveling to Moraga, California on Valentine’s Day.
