MALIBU, Calif. – Will Heimbrodt poured in 24 points to lead for Redhawks in double figures and Seattle University men’s basketball fought off a feisty Pepperdine squad to clinch an 87-80 West Coast Conference road win Wednesday night in Malibu.
The Redhawks (18-12, 7-10 WCC) completed the season sweep of the Waves (8-22, 3-14 WCC) and created separation in the standings heading into the final regular season games on Saturday.
Heimbrodt was efficient from the start, scoring 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting in the first half. He was joined in double figures in that frame by Austin Maurer and Junseok Yeo with 10 points each. Seattle U shot nearly 52% in the opening frame while forcing 12 Waves’ turnovers and taking a 39-27 advantage into the break.
Seattle U would stretch the lead to as many as 19, 54-35, on a John Chrsitofilis three at the 14:25 mark of the second half. The Waves would chip away, paced by eight second half threes, and trim the spread down to five, but would get no closer.
Along with his 24 points, Heimbrodt added five assists, five blocks, four steals and four rebounds. Maurer finished with 16 points and seven boards while Yeo added 13 points. Jojo Murphy notched is fourth straight double-digit output, adding 12 points and six assists. Christofilis rounded out the Redhawks’ double-digit scorers with 10, including a trio of threes.
Pepperdine had four in double figures as well, paced by David Mager’s 25 points. Styles Phipps added 19 points while leading scorer Aaron Clark was held to just six points, nearly 11 below his average.
The Redhawks close out the regular season on Saturday in Los Angeles, facing LMU at Gersten Pavilion. Tip-off is 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
