Redhawks Extend Win Streak to Three, Defeat UC Davis & UNLV

LAS VEGAS - Seattle University softball (6-2) locked down two more wins, defeating UC Davis (5-4) 7-2 and UNLV (2-6) 7-3 on day two of the UNLV Desert Classic inside Eller Media Stadium on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to three straight games.

LAS VEGAS - Seattle University softball (6-2) locked down two more wins, defeating UC Davis (5-4) 7-2 and UNLV (2-6) 7-3 on day two of the UNLV Desert Classic inside Eller Media Stadium on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to three straight games.

Junior Karen Spadafora led the Redhawks against the Aggies, combining for five RBI off a 3 RBI home run and two sac flys. She scored one run while adding seven put outs on the defense end

Freshman Audrey Borup paced the team with two hits and nine putouts at first base. She notched a double and RBI in three at bats. Senior Taylor Fitch led the team with three runs and four assists. Junior Avari Morris and freshman Oona Capristo rounded out the quartet of Redhawks with hits in game one.

Morris led the defense from the circle, pitching all 7.0 innings for her second win of the year. She faced 29 batters and struck out seven while only allowing two runs of which one was earned.

UC Davis struck first with a run off an RBI single before Morris handed out her second strike out of the contest. The Redhawks got two on in response before Spadafora came up facing two outs. She hammered out a 3 RBI home run to quickly pivot the lead to Seattle U. The Redhawks struck again in the bottom of the second as Morris scored freshman Jaeden Sajec with an RBI single.

The Aggies scored their final run in the top of the third as the Redhawks held them scoreless through the remaining four frames. Spadafora collected her fourth RBI of the contest with her first sac fly in the bottom of the third before Borup scored senior Brooklyn Jones with her RBI double. Spadafora tallied her final RBI of the contest with her second sac fly in the bottom of the fifth, allowing Fitch to score her third run of the contest.

Morris shut the door from the circle collecting two strikeouts between the sixth and seventh innings, guiding the Redhawks to victory with a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh. She wrapped the game by tossing out a backwards K to capture SU’s rematch against UC Davis 7-2.

The Redhawks returned later in the afternoon to face Desert Classic host UNLV. 

Fitch led the Redhawk offense with a program single home run record tying performance. She combined for two hits, four RBI and three runs. Senior Ava Sin paced the team with three hits against the Rebels while grabbing an RBI.

Jones led the defense alongside Borup, recording five assists from third base while Borup logged seven putouts from first.

Junior Berkley Vance led from the circle pitching 7.0  innings of the contest for her third win of the season. She faced 31 batters and struck out five. 

The Redhawks opened the first inning with three hits and two runs to take the early lead after Morris and graduate Jay Ross went back to back with singles to start the day. After Fitch stole second, Sin drafted the RBI single to score Morris before Borup reached on a UNLV error to score Fitch. Vance picked up her first strikeout to keep the Rebels scoreless in the first.

Vance led the team through the second inning, tossing two strikeouts. The Redhawks scored again in the third behind Fitch’s first homer of the day. Vance and Borup tag teamed another scoreless inning for UNLV, with Borup recording two putouts while Vance recorded a strikeout.

In the top of the fourth, the Redhawks got two runners on after an error and bunt single. Fitch came back to the plate with two runners on and faced two outs. Facing a 1-1 count, Fitch launched out her second home run of the contest, scoring both sophomore Abbie Fales and junior Sophia Kissling. UNLV matched SU with three runs in the fourth.

Fales led the team in the top of the fifth, scoring freshman pinch runner Jaeden Sajec with an RBI double. Vance and the Redhawks closed the contest holding the Rebels to three more scoreless innings. 

Seattle U wraps up the UNLV Desert Classic with its second game against Quinnipiac on Sunday, February 15 at 9:30 AM.
