Softball Rolls to UNLV Desert Classic

SEATTLE - Fresh off its first week of competition and West Coast Conference player of the week, Seattle University softball (3-2) carries its momentum into another week of stiff non-conference play, competing at the UNLV Desert Classic from February 13-15 against UC Davis (3-2), Quinnipiac (0-0) and UNLV (1-4) at Eller Media Stadium.

SEATTLE - Fresh off its first week of competition and West Coast Conference player of the week, Seattle University softball (3-2) carries its momentum into another week of stiff non-conference play, competing at the UNLV Desert Classic from February 13-15 against UC Davis (3-2), Quinnipiac (0-0) and UNLV (1-4) at Eller Media Stadium.

Senior Taylor Fitch commands the Redhawks into her third year in the Red and White, boasting a team leading .611 batting average through five games. The third baseman ranks tied fifth in the nation in hits alongside teammate junior Avari Morris, tallying 11 after opening weekend. Fitch is tied-16th in the country in home runs, enjoying three straight contests with a homer.

Fitch leads the conference in batting average, while Morris ranks second in the league after massing a .579 batting average through five games. Fitch also ranks second in the league in RBI, occurring eight last weekend. Her three home runs are tied with fellow senior Ava Sin for second most in the WCC.

Sin leads the team and the conference with 13 RBI, a mark that ranks second in the nation. The catcher/designated hitter in her return to action shattered the program’s single game RBI record, posting nine total RBI in Seattle U’s record breaking 23-7 victory over North Dakota. Sin is batting .353 in five games, collecting six hits and six runs.

Junior Karen Spadafora ranks third on the team with a .462 batting average, collecting six hits and scoring five runs in four games. She ranks second on the team with 24 putouts. Graduate Jay Ross leads the team with 25 putouts from first base. 

Leading from the circle is junior Berkley Vance. Vance grabbed two wins in two appearances while leading the team with 14.0 innings pitched. She totaled 12 strikeouts while limiting teams to a .173 batting average while holding a 2.50 ERA. Vance ranks third in the WCC in strikeouts and tied first in wins. 

Morris pitched SU’s third win of the season while ranking second on the team in strikeouts with 7. She has a 2.63 ERA after two appearances and has held teams to a .207 batting average.

Ross leads the defense with her 25 putouts, while Fitch paces the team with 11 assists on the season.

The Redhawks rank second in the WCC with their combined .354 batting average through five contests. They are tied first in hits with 56, while ranking first in runs (44), doubles (11), RBI (42) and slugging percentage (.557). SU is second in the WCC in home runs (7) and putouts (102).

On the national stage, Seattle U ranks amongst the top-50 in multiple categories. The Redhawks are 49th in the country in batting average, 19th in hits, tied-30th in home runs, tied-24th in RBIs and tied-26th in total runs.

SU opens the weekend against UC Davis, a program the Redhawks have met six times in their history. Seattle U trails the all-time record 2-4 against the Aggies dating back to 2003. The pair meet for the first time since 2020, with the Redhawks taking the most recent meeting with a 3-0 shutout.

Seattle U and Quinnipiac meet for the first time in program history on Friday and clash twice over the duration of the weekend. 

The Redhawks met host UNLV on Saturday afternoon for the eighth ever meeting. They trail the all-time record 3-4 dating back to their first meeting in 2011. The two last met in 2023 with the Rebels taking the narrow 8-7 victory in 11 innings.

Following the weekend, the Redhawks prepare for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Palm Springs, California from February 20-22.
