SEATTLE - Three scored in double-digits to guide Seattle University women’s basketball against the visiting Santa Clara Broncos (17-5, 7-2 WCC), but the effort would fall short of victory as the Redhawks (5-14, 1-7 WCC) fell 93-59 inside the Redhawk Center on Thursday evening.
Graduate Ella Brubaker led the SU scoring effort with 16 points shooting 50 percent from the field for her 16th double-digit scoring performance this season. She went one of two from behind the arc, while knocking down three makes from the free throw line on four attempts. Brubaker ended the evening with five rebounds, including three offensive boards, a block and a steal.
Graduate Andejla Bigovic scored 11 points shooting 40 percent from the floor, including one triple. Bigovic paced the team with six rebounds, including two offensive boards. Sophomore Sydnie Rodriguez matched Bigovic with six rebounds, scoring five points.
Freshman Chloe Emanga went for 11 points, built from a perfect 5-for-5 performance from the charity stripe. She combined for three makes from the field while matching Brubaker with five rebounds, including three offensive boards.
Redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin and freshman Jana Vesic each handed out three assists while scoring six points. Stricklin shot 50 percent from the floor and picked up four rebounds and a steal.
The Redhawks combined for 23 made field goals, including three triples, while shooting 90.9 percent from the free throw line. They grabbed 35 rebounds, while tallying five steals and three blocks. SU forced 12 turnovers, scoring 14 points off Bronco errors.
Bigovic led the scoring effort through the opening ten minutes, scoring five points while shooting 50 percent from the floor. SU led by as many as six through the first quarter, capitalizing on Bigovic’s scoring. The Broncos would claim the 18-11 lead after the first ten minutes.
Stricklin, Brubaker and Emanga combined for 12 points in the second quarter, with Emanga knocking down both attempts from the stripe. Brubaker and Stricklin each went two-of-three from the floor heading into the break. The Redhawks trailed 43-25 at the break.
Rodriguez led the way with five points coming out of halftime. Vesic scored four, shooting 50 percent from the field. Stricklin and Rodriguez each grabbed two rebounds. Brubaker and Emanga went for 15 through the final ten minutes, with Brubaker scoring eight to Emanga’s seven. The pair each connected three times from the free throw line. Emanga grabbed four boards, while Brubaker went 2-for-3 from the field, including a triple. The Redhawks would fall 93-59 after scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter.
Seattle U returns to action on Saturday afternoon, hosting Saint Mary’s for Alumni Day at the Redhawk Center at 1 PM.
