- Seattle U returned home for the first time in 2026 this week, capturing its first win of the New Year, 75-64, over San Diego on Thursday, Jan. 15 in the Redhawk Center.
- The win snapped a three-game skid following three straight West Coast Conference road games to open 2026. Seattle U is now 13-6 on the season and 2-4 in WCC play.
- The Redhawks had four players in double figures against the Toreros, paced by Junseok Yeo’s 18 points. Brayden Maldonado had 16 points and John Christofilis added 11 off the bench – his third double-digit scoring output in the past four games. Will Heimbrodt rounded things out with 10 points.
- Brock Felder went a perfect 4-4 from the field versus USD, marking the four straight game and eighth time overall this season he has been perfect from the field. Felder is shooting a team-high 83% (34-41) for the season.
- The Redhawks are now 9-2 at home this season, including 3-0 at Climate Pledge Arena.
- Under Head Coach Chris Victor (4+ seasons), the Redhawks are 60-15 (.800) at home, including a 17-4 mark at Climate Pledge Arena.
- The Jan. 17 meeting with Gonzaga marks the Redhawks’ fourth and final hosting of a fellow DI program from the state of Washington.
- This also marks the first time Seattle U has hosted a DI top-10 opponent since Jan. 8, 1977 when they hosted then No. 1-ranked San Francisco in a WCAC game (USF won 81-63).
ABOUT THE SERIES VS GONZAGA
- This marks the second meeting between Seattle U and Gonzaga within a 15-day span.
- The Zags won this season’s first meeting, 80-72, in overtime in Spokane on Jan. 2.
- Seattle U led 37-29 at the half before the then No. 7-ranked Zags tied the score in regulation, then outscored the Redhawks 15-7 in the extra frame to avoid the upset.
- Brayden Maldonado had 17 points, John Christofilis added 12 while Will Heimbrodt and Junseok Yeo chipped in 10 apiece.
- Gonzaga was paced by Braden Huff’s 28 points. Graham Ike had 24 points and 10 rebounds while Tyon Grant-Foster had 19. No other Zag had more than seven points.
- Seattle U and Gonzaga once had a storied regional rivalry, but prior to this season, had not met since 1980.
- The teams were conference opponents for the 1979-80 season – Gonzaga’s first in the then West Coast Athletic Conference (now WCC) and Seattle U’s final season in the league.
- Seattle U won the final meeting on Feb. 12, 1980 by a score of 87-66 at the Seattle Arena.
- The bulk of the all-time meetings were in the 1950s and 60s.
- The series dates back the 1946-47 season.
AGAINST THE RANKS
- The Redhawks have yet to defeat a top-25 opponent in their modern DI era.
- Seattle U’s meeting with No. 7 Gonzaga on Jan. 2 in Spokane marked just the fifth meeting against a ranked opponent in its modern-day DI era (dating back to the 2008-09 season), and the highest ranked opponent to date.
- Last season, the Redhawks travel to Durham, N.C., to date then-No. 11 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils won 70-48.
- The Redhawks battled then No. 22 Washington on Dec. 17, 2019. Seattle U led at halftime of that meeting, but the Huskies used a 23-3 surge in the final five minutes of play to win, 81-59.
- On Dec. 21, 2011, Seattle U hosted No. 24 Virginia at KeyArena. The Cavaliers won, 83-77.
- The Redhawks’ first ranked match-up came on Mar. 3, 2009 against then No. 13 Washington. The Huskies would claim an 87-60 victory at Alaska Airlines Arena.
- Seattle U’s last win over a ranked Division I opponent was an 82-64 victory over then No. 16 UNLV on Jan. 12, 1974.
VERSUS THE STATE OF WASHINGTON
- The Redhawks are 3-1 against their DI intra-state rivals so far this season with wins over Eastern Washington (94-67) on Nov. 12, Washington (70-66) on Dec. 19 and Washington State (69-55) on Dec. 30.
- The Redhawks lost the first of two meetings with Gonzaga, falling 80-72 in Spokane on Jan. 2 to the seventh-ranked Bulldogs.
- Seattle U hosts all four other Division I programs in the state of Washington during the 2025-26 season and play six total games against DI intra-state rivals.
- The final home game will be on Jan. 17 against Gonzaga.
- The Redhawks also travel to Washington State on Jan. 28.
