SANTA CLARA, Calif. - A fiery opening ten minutes for Seattle University women’s basketball (4-9, 0-2 WCC) was eventually ousted as the Redhawks fell to Santa Clara (12-3, 2-0 WCC) 94-65 inside the Leavey Center on Tuesday evening.

Four Redhawks scored in double digits with redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin leading the way with a season high 17 points off of a career best tying seven made field goals. Stricklin finished the night with a season high three makes from behind the arc, while grabbing six rebounds, including two offensive boards, and two blocks.

Graduate Ella Brubaker collected her 11th double-digit scoring effort of the season for her ninth double-digit scoring affair in a row. She tallied 15 points, shooting 50 percent from the field, including two makes from three. Brubaker led the Redhawks from the free throw line, hitting 3-for-3 from the stripe. The guard handed out two assists to match her career DI best while bringing down three rebounds. 

Graduate Andjela Bigovic scored 13 points in her first game since CSU Bakersfield in mid-December. The forward shot 60 percent from the field, while leading the Redhawks with seven rebounds and four assists. 

Junior Lucija Milkovic scored 10 points in her fourth start this season, shooting 50 percent from the floor in 20 minutes of action. She finished the night with six rebounds.

Sophomore Sydnie Rodriguez matched Bigovic with seven rebounds, while freshman Jana Vesic mimicked Bigovic’s four assists.

The Redhawks shot a combined 44 percent from the floor, collecting 28 made field goals, including six triples. They matched Santa Clara point for point in the paint, each scoring 42. The rebounding battle ended in a tie, with both the Redhawks and Broncos grabbing 39. SU held the edge with defensive rebounds, grabbing 30 to SCU’s 26.

Seattle U opened up its second West Coast Conference contest on an absolute tear, shooting above 70 percent through the opening ten minutes for 10 made field goals on 14 attempts. Stricklin led the Redhawks with eight points, including two makes from three. Brubaker posted an additional seven as the Redhawks trailed the Broncos at the end of the first by two.

Milkovic led Seattle U through the second quarter, finishing a perfect three-for-three from the field for six points. Bigovic scored four while bringing in four rebounds as the offense settled after the first. The Redhawks trailed at the break 50-37.

Brubaker and Stricklin teamed up in the third quarter, scoring five points a piece on a combined 50 percent shooting from the floor. The pair each connected once from three as the Broncos continued to build up a lead out of the break. Bigovic took over in the fourth, scoring seven to get to double-digits, shooting 3-for-4 including one make from beyond the arc as the Redhawks were turned away by the Broncos 94-65.

Seattle U returns home to host Gonzaga at the Redhawk Center on January 2. The Bulldogs are the first of a three game homestand for the Redhawks as Washington State and San Diego will also make the trip to First Hill in the first week of the new year.
