SEATTLE - Seattle University women’s basketball (3-5) hosts Evergreen State (0-1) at the Redhawk Center for an 11 AM matchup in front of local Seattle elementary and middle school students as a celebration of Kids Day and for Fight for Literacy on Tuesday, December 2.
It will be a quick turn around for the Redhawks after grabbing a runner up finish at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic on Sunday afternoon. They take on the Geoducks after a 3,000 mile journey back to the Pacific Northwest following the holiday weekend in Miami. SU split its pair of games, defeating Presbyterian for the first time in program history before falling to tournament host FIU in the championship game.
Graduate Ella Brubaker paced the team on the weekend, earning a selection to the all-tournament team as a result. She averaged 19.5 points per game, shooting 50 percent from the field and 44 percent from behind the arc during the event. She combined for 39 points, connecting four times from three and captured a new career high from the free throw line, knocking down ten against Presbyterian. The guard hauled in 5.5 rebounds a game, while grabbing one steal a contest.
Brubaker leads the team and ranks eighth in the WCC averaging 14.8 points a game shooting 42.2 percent from the field through eight games. She is one of three Redhawks who rank top-25 in the conference in scoring. Fellow graduate Andjela Bigovic is posting 9.7 points a game, shooting 41.7 percent from the floor, while redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin is recording 9.5 points a game shooting 42 percent from the floor.
Stricklin is one of the league's top rebounders and comes off her second double-double of the year. She’s averaging 7.5 rebounds a game, corralling 60 on the season.
Freshman Jana Vesic ranks seventh in the WCC with 3.8 assists per game. She’s averaging 9.0 points on the scoring end, appearing in all eight games this year. Fellow freshman Dylan Mogel ranks right outside the top-10, handing out 3.1 assists per game.
The Redhawks are sent to the line the third most frequent of all WCC teams and have the second highest amount of makes from the line on the season this far, combining for 96 makes from the charity stripe. They shoot a combined 75.2 percent from the free throw line, a mark that ranks second in the league. SU sits sixth in the WCC in FGM through eight games, posting 182.
Seattle U is 14-0 in the all-time series against Evergreen State. The pair first met in 1997 and have played three times since the Redhawks returned to the Division I level in 2008. SU is 8-0 in home games against the Geoducks after meeting inside the Redhawk Center a season ago. The Redhawks scored 88 in the victory, the most they have scored in the series history.
The Geoducks arrive in Seattle after facing Saint Martin’s in an exhibition prior to the holiday weekend. They have played one game that has counted towards their overall record so far this season, falling to Western Oregon in their season debut on November 22. The Redhawks will be Evergreen State’s final exhibition game before the Geoducks get their first taste of conference play on the road at Oregon Tech.
After Tuesday’s morning game, the Redhawks have 11 days off before returning to the Redhawk Center to host CSU Bakersfield on December 13.
