PORTLAND - Three put up double digit scoring efforts in a Pacific Northwest clash with Portland State, as graduate Ella Brubaker guided the Seattle University women’s basketball team (4-7) in what would be a 85-62 defeat to the Vikings (4-7) inside Viking Pavilion on Wednesday evening.
Brubaker clinched 20 points for the second time this season, combining for seven makes from the field, including three triples to tie her career best makes from three point land. On the defensive end, the graduate guard picked up five rebounds, a block and a steal.
Sophomore Sydnie Rodriguez posted a career best tying 16 points off a new career high six makes from the field. She shot 66.7 percent from the floor while connecting on her lone attempt from behind the arc. The Boise guard finished one rebound shy of her first collegiate double-double, hauling in a team leading nine on the night. Rodriguez also picked up a new career high five steals.
Junior Lucija Milkovic scored 14, shooting 53.8 percent from floor, while picking up seven rebounds. The center finished the night one block shy of tying second all-time in the Division I era, posting a career best four blocks. She also picked up a new career best two steals on the defensive end.
Freshmen Chloe Emanga and Dylan Mogel facilitated the Redhawk offense, combining for seven assists. Emanga tied her career best with three assists, finishing the night with six points while picking up a block and a steal.
The Redhawks combined for 25 made field goals, including five triples. They generated 30 points in the paint while scoring 12 second chance points. Defensively, they brought down 34 rebounds, while picking up 11 steals and leading the Vikings with six blocks.. They forced 16 total turnovers, while scoring 16 points off of those Portland State miscues.
Portland State opened the scoring, putting up the first five points before the Redhawks responded with a 6-0 run led by Milkovic and Rodriguez. They would maintain their narrow lead until the three minute mark in the first after the Vikings closed out the opening ten minutes on a 12-5 run.
The Redhawks turned the tables in the second, out scoring the Vikings by five. They shot 83.3 percent as a team over the ten minutes before the half time break, as Milkovic scored eight and Brubaker netted seven points. With 11 seconds remaining before half, Milkovic leveled the game 36-36 with a bucket, the assist coming from sophomore Lucy Larson.
Portland State would put up two 20+ point quarters to maintain a lead late into the second half. A gritty defensive stand by the Redhawks in the fourth quarter pulled the game back within nine with two blocks from Milkovic and seven points from both Brubaker and Rodriguez. The pair of guards each grabbed a steal a piece in the surge before the Vikings pushed back to lead late in the contest. Sophomore Fia Proctor claimed the final bucket for the Redhawks with under thirty seconds left in the contest to end the night 82-65 in favor of Portland State.
The Redhawks return after an 11 day break over the holidays to start West Coast Conference action. They travel to Stockton, California to face Pacific for their WCC debut on December 28.
Seattle U returns home in the new year to host Gonzaga on January 2, the first game of a three game home stand at the Redhawk Center.
