SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Seattle University volleyball fielded two Redhawks onto West Coast Conference post-season awards teams after completing its first season in the conference. Sophomore Madyn Cervellera was tabbed an All-WCC honorable mention and freshman Petra Fritz earned a spot on the All-WCC freshman team, as announced by the league this afternoon.
Cervellera was a staple piece of the Redhawk offense all season long, ranking amongst the top-five in the league in kills for the duration of the conference season. The outside hitter combined for 378 kills through 29 matches, averaging 3.32 kills per set. Her 378 kills is now fourth all-time in the program’s Division I history. It was the first time since 2017 that a Redhawk has cracked the top-four in single season kills in the DI era. In conference contests, she tallied 233 kills, a mark that ranked sixth in the WCC.
The Lake Stevens native also ranked 15th in the conference in digs, recording 261 through 114 sets of action, averaging 2.57 digs per set. She recorded 24 aces from the service line while combining for 41.0 total blocks. Cervellera recorded 426.0 points after appearing and starting in all 29 matches in her first season in the Red and White, a feat that ranked third in the WCC.
Fritz was SU’s signature from the service line, with her .47 aces per set ranking second in the WCC. The outside hitter ranked amongst the top-five in the league in aces per set for all of conference action en route to her program record setting season. She tallied 48 aces to break the all-time DI record by two, a feat that stood since 2015. Her. 47 aces per set through 102 sets of action is now second all-time in the DI era, breaking the previous second place spot from 2016.
The Corrales, N.M. native was named the WCC’s Freshman of the Week on Nov. 10 after guiding the Redhawks to their first conference victory of the season against San Francisco. She tallied 25 kills across six sets of action on the weekend, defeating the Dons with 23 kills in four sets, a feat that tied third all time in the DI era for kills in a four set match. She went for five aces against USF to tie her collegiate season high. Fritz became the 13th Redhawk in the DI era to be honored with a conference weekly award.
Fritz tallied 193 kills in her debut campaign, of which 145 were in conference contests, a mark that ranked 25th in the WCC. Of her 48 aces, 30 came against WCC opponents. Fritz ended the season with 180 digs and 12.0 blocks, scoring 247.0 points across 29 matches.
The Redhawks grabbed two conference wins in their first season in the WCC, taking down both San Francisco and Oregon State at home. SU finished the year tying last year’s eight match wins, making it the third straight year with eight wins on the season. With the recognition of Cervellera and Fritz, the Redhawks have fielded members to All-Conference teams for the third straight year, while putting multiple in one season for the first time since 2017.
