SEATTLE - Seattle University women’s basketball (1-2, 0-0 WCC)  faced a tough go round against the visiting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (2-1, 0-0 Big West) with shots not falling the Redhawks way in the eventual 89-49 defeat on Sunday afternoon at the Redhawk Center.

Freshman Jana Vesic led the Redhawks in her first program start, scoring 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including two triples. The guard hit 50 percent from behind the arc on the day. The effort was a new collegiate best and second straight double-digit scoring affair for the Serbian. She led all Redhawks with three assists.

Scoring in double digits alongside Vesic was graduate Ella Brubaker. She netted 13 points including six points from three point land, connecting for 50 percent shooting from behind the arc. She finished the day a perfect 5-for-5 from the charity stripe for a new career best and four rebounds.

Junior Lucija Milkovic scored six off the bench on 3-of-5 shooting in 11 minutes of action while grabbing three rebounds. Redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin captured 10 rebounds to lead all Redhawks, scoring five. She matched her career best on the defensive end, picking up two blocks.

The Redhawks scored 26 points in the paint, while combining for 81.8 percent shooting from the free throw line.

Seattle U opened with quick makes from Brubaker from three and kept pace with the Gauchos until under six mark in the first quarter. UCSB couldn’t seem to miss through the final five minutes, while the Redhawks struggled to hit makes from the field. The Gauchos carried their momentum in the half to lead the Redhawks 50-19 at the break.

The Redhawks found offensive momentum in the third quarter, with Vesic and Stricklin combining for nine points. They closed the third on a 9-0 run, keeping the Gauchos from scoring through the final three minutes of the quarter. UCSB built up to its largest lead through the closing ten minutes until the Redhawks out scored the Gauchos 7-2 through the final two minutes, including five points from Vesic.

SU returns to action on Tuesday, as the Redhawks take their first road contest outside the state of Washington with an evening matchup against Fresno State at 6PM at the Save Mart Center. The Redhawks return home on Saturday, November 15 to host Cal Poly.
