SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Seattle University volleyball concluded its first year through the West Coast Conference with a trip to Santa Clara, but despite never going away the Redhawks (8-21, 2-16 WCC) fell 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 22-25) to the Broncos (17-12, 12-6 WCC) in the Leavey Center on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Madyn Cevellera led the Redhawk offense with 10 kills, picking up a double-double, her 12th of the season, in the process. The outside hitter posted 12 digs and picked up a block on the defensive end.
Three Redhawks went for multiple aces, with redshirt junior Yasemin Elmas leading the charge from the service line with three, a new career high for the middle blocker. Redshirt junior Elif Teksoy recorded two while leading the team in assists with 29. Teksoy ended the day with two kills on five attempts, hitting .400 with no errors.
Freshman Petra Fritz rounded out the trio, tacking on two aces to her DI record breaking ace season. The outside hitter is now the sole leader of aces in a single season in the Division I era, with 47 through her first collegiate season. Fritz finished the day with nine kills, eight digs and two assists.
Junior Teagan Melton hit .467, tallying nine kills on 15 attempts with two errors. The opposite also went for a team leading 2.0 blocks.
The Redhawks combined for 35 kills, 34 assists, nine aces, 40 digs and 3.0 blocks, leading the Broncos from the service line six aces.
Seattle U kept pace with the Broncos through the opening set, before Elmas elevated the Redhawks to their first lead of the day behind three straight aces from the service lines. SU and Santa Clara would exchange six ties before the Broncos went out by three 17-14. The Redhawks pulled back within one behind a kill from Melton and an ace from Katelynn Albano, but the Broncos would out score them 5-2 to close out the first set.
Santa Clara carried its momentum at the end of the first set into the second, leading by as many as seven before Melton and Fritz put the Redhawks on a 4-0 run to pull back within three 13-16. SU kept close, maintaining the three point gap, but the Broncos would put away the second set, out scoring the Redhawks 6-4.
A block from Elmas and Cervellera followed by an ace from Fritz gave the Redhawks the early third set lead. Santa Clara would wrestle back the lead through the middle of the set, leading the Redhawks by seven, 11-18, before SU took a time out.
Out of the break, an error from Santa Clara sent Teksoy to the service line before Melton and Hardgrave combined for two kills. Teksoy tacked on an ace, to give the Redhawks a 4-0 run to force a Bronco timeout. Hardgrave and Melton teamed up at the net before Melton knocked down a kill to pull the Redhawks within a score 17-18. Teksoy struck a second time with an ace to level the set 18-all before the Broncos cut off the surge.
