Redhawks Make Statement at Gonzaga Invitational
Spokane, Wash. - Seattle University's women's tennis team made a statement performance at the Gonzaga Invitational this past weekend to close out the fall season. Leading the way were Daria Nazarenko and Larissa Teramura each defeating Gonzaga opponents to win their respective draws, while Lamija Avdic advanced the semifinals of her draw.
After a slower start in their first fall competition, the Redhawks hit their stride in the tournament, with strong performances in both the doubles and singles categories.
In the doubles, Lola Tavcar and Daria Nazarenko made it to the semifinals, defeating Juliet Santitto and Avery Jennings of Oregon, 6-3, and Kamila Slovakova and Meghna Anand of Montana, 6-1, before falling to Gonzaga's Rose Hayes and Sveva Zerpelloni, 6-3.
Nazarenko carried her dominance into singles play, where she defeated Eastern Washington's Sara Vasic, 6-2, 6-2, on day one. On day two, she beat Kennedy Harris of Portland, 6-2, 6-4, and Olivia Halvorsen of Utah State, 6-4, 7-5. For the day three finale, she took on host Gonzaga's Ella Nielsen, winning 6-1, 6-2.
Larissa Teramura also impressed. Although dropping her first match to Montana State's Lola Bean, who eventually fell in the semifinals, Teramura would go on to win the back draw. On day two she defeated Portland's Kylie Canubida, 1-6, 6-2, 10-5, and on day three beat another Portland player, Marta Gigilio, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8. She then went on to vanquish Gonzaga's Diana Yanotovskaya 6-3, 6-2 to secure her victory.
Lamija Avdic's performance is not to be overlooked, defeating Portland's Nadine Arbaizar Martinez, 6-3, 7-5, on day one. The next day, she took down Idaho's Naomi Schraeder, 6-1, 6-3, before losing a hard-fought battle to Gonzaga's Emily Robertson, 4-6, 7-6 (7), 5-10 in the semifinals. Robertson would go on to win the draw.
The rest of the Redhawks would also rack up some wins, with Lamija Avdic and Natalia Michta defeating Montana's Shivika Agrawal and Monika Fizova 6-1 in doubles, and Amina Avdic defeating Montana State's Kavya Khirwar, 6-3, 7-6 (7) in her second-ever collegiate competition.
This was the final fall tournament for the Redhawks, and they will next compete on January 23, 2026 when they face off against Denver University.
