MIAMI, Fla. - Traveling over 3,000 miles from its home on First Hill, Seattle University women’s basketball (2-4) embarks on a two-game weekend at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic, tipping off the weekend against Presbyterian (2-4) before closing out the tournament on Sunday against either UMBC (2-4) or host Florida International (1-3) at the Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
The Redhawks’ graduate duo, Ella Brubaker and Andjela Bigovic, lead the team in scoring, averaging 13.2 and 11.0 points per game respectively. Fellow veteran, redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin, cleans up the glass, picking up 6.8 boards a game to lead the team and rank top-10 in the WCC. The forward also tacks on 9.0 points a contest through six starts.
Brubaker leads the team with 1.8 steals a game, while Bigovic ranks first on the team in shooting, hitting 44.4 percent from the field after five games.
Maneuvering the offense are SU’s freshmen guard duo Dylan Mogel and Jana Vesic. The pair rank amongst the top of the West Coast Conference, with Vesic handing out a team leading 3.6 assists per game. Mogel sits right behind, dishing out 3.3 assists per game. Vesic has averaged 9.3 points a game, starting in three games. Mogel picks up 1.2 steals a game on the defensive end.
The Redhawks are in the upper crust of the WCC from the free throw line, sitting fourth shooting 73 percent from the stripe. They rank fourth in the league with 65 makes from the free throw line, while sitting sixth in the conference in FGM.
All three opponents in the tournament field, UMBC, Presbyterian and host FIU, are all new opposition for the program. Friday’s meeting with the Blue Hose is the first ever meeting between the two teams. Aside from the Redhawks, the field is made entirely of institutions located in the Eastern timezone. Seattle U has faced 28 teams that live in the Eastern timezone in their history.
The Blue Hose enter the weekend holding a similar record to the Redhawks, grabbing two wins on the year, defeating Warren Wilson and Erskine at home. Presbyterian is 0-4 on the road this season.
The Retrievers look to snap a three game losing skid, searching for their second road win of the year after defeating Virginia in their third game of the season. They take on FIU on day one of the tournament.
The Panthers are 1-3 on the year, falling in their last two road games. They are 1-0 at home, defeating Bethune-Cookman the second week of the season.
Seattle U meets the Blue Hose at 10:30 AM PT on Friday, November 28. Following Friday’s outcome, the winner takes on the winner of FIU/UMBC on Saturday morning.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks journey back home to host Evergreen State on Tuesday, December 2.
