Redhawks Rein in Win Over Mustangs

SEATTLE - Four from Seattle University women’s basketball’s roster scored in double-digits to elevate the Redhawks (2-3, 0-0 WCC) over Cal Poly (1-2, 0-0 Big West) 75-73 at the Redhawk Center on Saturday afternoon. 

Graduate Andjela Bigovic went for 20 points on 52.9 percent shooting from the floor, two points shy of tying her career high. She hauled in eight rebounds, including two offensive boards, while corralling in a steal and a block through 27 minutes of action. Bigovic was one of two Redhawks to connect twice from three, securing her new season high in triples in Saturday’s win.

Fellow graduate Ella Brubaker scored 16, shooting 7-of-15 from the floor and bagging a three. She matched Bigovic with eight rebounds, a new career high, while pulling in three offensive boards. Brubaker paced the defense with three blocks, to tie her career high, while picking a new career best four steals.

Redshirt senior Tamia Stricklin grabbed her first double-double of the season, going for ten points and securing a season high 10 rebounds, shooting 44.4 percent from the floor while connecting one-for-one on shots from behind the arc. The forward nabbed four steals for a new career high while dishing out three assists, a new season high.

Freshman Chloe Emanga scored a new collegiate best 15 points, shooting 6-of-8 including a perfect 2-for-2 clip from three. She grabbed three rounds and handed out two assists in 27 minutes of action. 

Freshman Dylan Mogel orchestrated the offense, handing out six assists on the afternoon, one shy of her collegiate best. She scored four on 50 percent shooting while grabbing three rebounds and two steals. 

The Redhawks shot 46.3 percent from the field, netting seven triples on the afternoon. They shot 50 percent or better from the field through both halves, ending the final 20 minutes shooting a combined 58.8 percent. SU grabbed 38 rebounds, four blocks and 12 steals while handing out 16 assists.

Seattle U saw 51 points from its bench, while scoring 46 points in the paint and 19 off of turnovers. 

The Redhawks trailed early through the opening four minutes of action until a 6-0 surge led by a trio of seniors tied the game 8-8. After a surge from Cal Poly, Su trailed 15-10 at the four minute mark before the Redhawks unleashed for 12 points, kick started by a successful three point play from freshman Jana Vesic off the driving layup. Sophomore Sydnie Rodriguez connected for a triple to claim SU’s first lead before Bigovic pushed the lead to four off a triple.

Emanga netted her first make from behind the arc to put the Redhawks on top of the Mustangs 22-15 with under two minutes in the first. Cal Poly scored through the final sixty seconds, but the Redhawks took the 22-19 lead into the second quarter.

Cal Poly carried its momentum into the second scoring four of the first six points seen in the opening minutes. SU took back the lead from the line, as sophomore Fia Proctor went a perfect 2-for-2. Bigovic followed up with her second make from three to put the Redhawks back on top by six. The Mustangs clamped down the Redhawk offense through nearly three minutes until Bigovic broke through at the 4:22 mark. Trailing three with a 1:18 left before half, Mogel scored to cut the deficit by one, putting the Redhawks right behind the Mustangs 36-35 heading into halftime.

Stricklin struck immediately from downtown out of the break to put the Redhawks back ahead of the Mustangs before Cal Poly built up a lead from a 6-0 run. SU trailed by as many as eight before Emanga scored six straight for the Redhawks to cut the deficit to 53-51 with a 1:30 left in the third. Emanga scored with 12 seconds left in the third to cut into Cal Poly’s lead 55-54 entering the final ten minutes.

Cal Poly played keep away through the first five minutes until Bigovic leveled the game 66-all with a make off a steal. Stricklin forced another steal and Emanga picked up the assist on Brubaker’s lead taking layup with four minutes remaining. Bigovic pushed the Redhawks up by four after sinking a hook shot. Brubaker and Bigovic teamed up for four more points leading into the minute mark as the Redhawks led 74-69 with 1:06 left. 

The Mustangs cut SU’s lead to three from the free throw line, but Stricklin would keep the two possession lead with under 10 seconds with a make from the charity stripe. The Mustangs connected for a bucket at the buzzer, but the Redhawks came out on top 75-73 to capture their second win at home of the year while defeating Cal Poly for the first time since 2019.

Seattle U travels through the remainder of November, heading to Boise State next Friday before jetting across the country for Thanksgiving at Florida International. The Redhawks return home on December 2 when they host Evergreen State for Kids Day.
