SEATTLE - Seattle University volleyball’s two match home stint concludes with a head-to-head match up against the West Coast Conference’s leader San Diego at 1 PM on Saturday afternoon at the Redhawk Center.
The Redhawks (6-11, 0-6 WCC) look to turn the tide after falling to Pepperdine on Thursday evening, while the Toreros (14-4, 7-0 WCC) look to maintain their seven match winning streak since conference action began at the end of September.
Sophomore Madyn Cervellera leads the Redhawks with 225 kills on the year, averaging 3.31 per set. The Lake Stevens native also ranks amongst the conference’s top dig leaders, collecting151 through 68 sets played. The mark ranks her 14th in the league.
From the opposite corner, junior Teagan Melton has provided ample offensive support, combining for 126 kills.
Guiding the offense is SU’s trio of setters, led by sophomore Grace Jones. Her 4.49 assists per set ranks 15th in the WCC, while redshirt junior Elif Teksoy cracked the top-20, averaging 4.21 assists per set in 28 set appearances. Sophomore Anae Asuncion sits right behind Teksoy, averaging 3.93 assists per set for 216 on the year.
Leading from the service line is freshman Petra Fritz, who ranks first in the conference in aces per set, posting .47. Her 28 aces on the year ties first. Fellow freshman Katelynn Albano ranks tied 20th with 21 aces. Albano also locks down the defense from the floor, ranking tied-ninth in digs with 188, averaging 2.76 a set.
The Redhawk block is led by redshirt junior Yasemin Elmas, who ranks 15th in the WCC with .86 blocks per set. She leads the team with 56.0 total on the year.
Together, the Redhawks rank fifth overall with 139 blocks this season, averaging 2.04 per set. Their 200 block assists rank fourth in the league while they rank fifth in the WCC with 39 solo blocks.
Saturday’s contest is the third ever meeting between the Redhawks and the Toreros. San Diego leads the all-time series 2-0 dating back to SU’s first Division I season in 2008, collecting wins in both Seattle and San Diego. The pair have not played since 2009, with the Toreros grabbing the 3-0 victory in San Diego that year.
The Toreros enter as the league’s lone undefeated in conference play team after maintaining their unbeaten streak with a 3-0 sweep over Washington State on Thursday night. Seattle U is their fifth road test in eight matches.
Following the weekend, the Redhawks split their upcoming contests, traveling to Saint Mary’s before hosting Santa Clara for their Pink Match on Saturday, October 25.
