SEATTLE - Thursday’s rematch between the Seattle University volleyball team and Pepperdine would favor the visiting Waves (10-7, 4-2 WCC) 3-0 (18-25, 12-25, 16-25) in the Redhawks’ (6-11, 0-6 WCC) return home to the Redhawk Center on Thursday night.
Freshman Petra Fritz led the Redhawks with 10 kills, one shy of matching the season high she recorded last Saturday against Gonzaga. The outside hitter would tack on four digs on the defensive end.
Senior Marley Hardgrave paced the team with a .667 hitting percentage, combining for six kills on nine attempts with no errors. She also led the charge on the defensive end, picking up 3.0 blocks to lead all Redhawks.
Sophomore Madyn Cervellera and freshman Katelynn Albano combined for 18 digs, each posting nine on the evening. Cervellera tallied five kills while collecting 2.0 blocks.
Junior Teagan Melton and redshirt junior Yasemin Elmas picked up four kills a piece, while Melton matched Cervellera with 2.0 blocks.
Redshirt junior Elif Teksoy orchestrated the offense with 22 assists and contributed a kill and six digs.
Together the Redhawks tallied 30 kills, 27 assists, 29 digs and 4.0 blocks.
The evening opened in a back and forth as the pair traded runs. Pepperdine built up its lead 15-10 heading into the media timeout while in tandem negating any Redhawk runs, ultimately securing the first set 25-18.
Seattle U opened the second set mimicking the first, pivoting away an early Pepperdine lead away behind a 4-0 run. While the Redhawks could curb the Waves from large bursts of scoring in the opening set, the Waves surged through the middle of set two behind a 9-0 run. Pepperdine claimed the 2-0 set lead behind a 3-1 run at the end of the second set.
The pair traded points in the third set before the Waves went up by four, 10-6. The Redhawks responded with back-to-back scores led by Hardgrave to pull within two before Pepperdine produced a 5-1 run to push its lead back up. The Waves would not relent out of the media timeout, out scoring the Redhawks 4-2 before they forced match point. Seattle U did not go quietly, with Fritz and Cervellera keeping the Redhawks alive with kills but the effort was ended from a final Pepperdine point to take down Seattle U at home.
SU returns to action on Saturday when it hosts conference leader San Diego at 1 PM at the Redhawk Center.
