SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Yeider Zuluaga tallied his first goal of the season for Seattle University men's soccer, but the Redhawks could not stop Missouri State's Fumiya Shiraishi who finished with a school record four goals to lead the 24th-ranked Bears to a 4-1 final.
Shiraishi put the home team on the board in the 15th minute, slotting a shot into the lower left corner of the net. The Redhawks would equalize five minutes later as keeper Charlie Lanphier corralled a Missouri State free kick and quickly sent a long punt up field to a streaking Zuluaga.
The senior midfielder beat Missouri State's onrushing keeper, heading the ball from the top of the box into the open goal.
Shiraishi put the Bears back on top in the 42nd minute, then added third and fourth goals in the 70th and 82nd minute before subbing out.
The Redhawks finished with five shots, four on goal, to the Bears seven shots. Seattle U earned six corner kicks while surrendering just one.
The season-opening, cross country road swing continues Sunday as the Redhawks take on the North Carolina Tarheels in Chapel Hill, N.C. Kick off is 7:30 p.m. Eastern, 4:30 p.m. Pacific.
