DENVER - Five Seattle U softball players in Jasmine Wehn, KJ Hopfer, Nicola Simpson, Naomi Chaidez and Avari Morris, earned CSC All-Academic All-District distinction in recognition of their success on the field and in the classroom this season as selected by College Sports Communicators. Morris and Simpson were selected as CSC Academic All-America finalists to be voted on starting in late May with honorees announced on June 17.
To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must hold at least sophomore standing both academically and athletically while holding at least a 3.50 GPA and participating in 90 percent or starting 66 percent of an institution's games. Pitchers must have made 17 appearances or pitched 35.0 innings.
Both Wehn and Simpson were recognized for the second straight year, having earned All-District recognition a season ago.
Wehn earned the start and appeared in all 53 contests this season for the Redhawks. She posted a .309 batting average, accruing a team leading 56 hits, which included 16 doubles and three home runs, 41 RBI and a team leading 331 putouts at first base.
Hopfer made 38 appearances at second base, cataloging 35 starts while picking up 56 assists, the second most on the team, and 47 putouts.
Chaidez appeared 14 times in the circle this season, pitching 45.0 innings and striking out 24 batters while pitching three complete games and earning a save.
Simpson and Morris earned All-WAC and NFCA All-Region honors this season, flourishing as SU's pair of dual threat pitchers. Both Morris and Simpson also earned a combined three WAC Pitcher of the Week distinctions on the year.
Simpson paced the Redhawks from the circle, holding a 2.40 ERA on the year. She catalogued 10 wins in 23 appearances, while pitching a team leading nine complete games. She pitched 113.2 total innings while handing out 94 strikeouts. As a hitter, Simpson saw new career bests in hits (47), doubles (11), home runs (6), and RBI (32) while holding a .292 batting average.
Morris led the charge offensively for the Redhawks, holding a team leading .418 batting average after 110 at bats. She recorded 46 hits, including seven doubles, two triples and a grand slam, while cataloguing 22 RBI. She made 21 appearances in the circle this season, highlighting the year by tossing the program's sixth ever no-hitter. Morris posted 67 strikeouts in 80.2 innings pitched while capturing six wins.
