BELLEVUE, WA - Seattle U baseball dropped their conference series opener with California Baptist, 4-11, Friday afternoon at Bannerwood Park. The Redhawks put together a couple of rallies, highlighted by a 9th inning home run by Josh Cunnigan, but couldn't find the runs needed in game one.
The first two runs of the game for the home side came in the 7th off a sacrifice fly from Tervell Johnson and an RBI single from Hunter Komine. Cunnigan's home run, which was the first of his collegiate career, was a 2-run blast in over the right field wall. Jared Stevenson, who went 2-for-4, scored during both innings and was the only Redhawk with a multi-hit day.
On the mound, Blake Smith (1-5) was credited with the loss. He would go 5.2 IP while allowing just three earned on 8 hits. Reid Madariaga was dinged for six earned over two innings, while Patrick Galvin had a scoreless 1.1 to finish the game off.
The loss drops the Redhawks to 17-30 on the season and to 5-14 in conference play. They will be back in action tomorrow for game two of the series, with the home field shifting to Everett's Funko Field. First pitch is set for 9:30am PT with Micah Hagler scheduled to make the start on the mound.
