ARLINGTON, Texas - Following a delayed start due to weather, a late triple by sophomore Mikee Morris pulled the Seattle U softball team (24-23, 9-13 WAC) within a run but UT Arlington (24-22, 10-12 WAC) shut the door on the Redhawks 5-4 at Allan Saxe Field on Friday evening.
The Redhawks combined for nine hits and four RBI while playing an errorless game. They picked up 18 putouts and turned two double plays.
Three different Redhawks went for multiple hits on the day with sophomore Mikee Morris leading the charge with two hits and two RBI in four at bats. She recorded two triples, her first of the season and a new career high triples in a game for the shortstop. The mark makes Mikee the third ever Redhawk to collect two triples in a single contest, with the feat now achieved four times in the program's history.
Junior Taylor Fitch also collected two hits, including a double, and an RBI in three at bats. Sophomore Karen Spadafora rounded out the trio with two hits, including her ninth home run of the season, in three at bats.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn, sophomore Avari Morris and freshman Camryn Johnson all locked up a hit for the Redhawks. Both Avari and Johnson scored one run a piece. Senior Tai Wilson scored her 44th run of the season.
Leading the defense was Wehn with eight putouts on the day, while Spadafora picked up an additional four. Mikee led the way with two assists.
Guiding the Redhawks from the circle and earning the start was senior Nicola Simpson. She pitched 5.0 innings and faced 24 batters while striking out three of them looking. Simpson also recorded two assists on the evening. Avari Morris pitched the final 1.0 inning and faced five batters while striking out one.
Mikee Morris led off the day with a triple out to center field before Wilson reached on a fielder's choice. Facing one out, Fitch launched an RBI double to score Wilson from first to take the early 1-0 lead. UTA responded with a run of its own before the Redhawks sent them down, turning a double play.
Spadafora put the Redhawks back up after a solo shot out of left center field in the second while the Seattle U defense sent down the next three Mavericks with its second double play in as many innings.
The Mavericks evened the game after holding the Redhawks scoreless in the top of the third despite offensive movement by Fitch. Neither team scored in the fourth as Simpson picked up her second backwards K.
UTA secured its first lead of the day behind a 2 RBI homer out of left field before capturing its insurance run with a subsequent solo shot to left field in the sixth. Trailing 5-2 at the top of the seventh, Avari Morris kept the Redhawk comeback alive with a single up the middle before Johnson advanced Morris into scoring position. Facing two outs, Mikee Morris launched her second triple of the day to score both Avari and Johnson to pull within a run, but the comeback was cut short and the Redhawks fell 5-4.
Seattle U returns for a doubleheader at Allan Saxe Field with a slated 8 AM PT start tomorrow to wrap up its final regular season series.
