RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Seattle U softball (28-25) exited the 2025 WAC Tournament in the semifinals following a heartbreaking 9-8 loss to No. 8 Utah Valley (18-32) at John C. Funk Stadium on Friday night.
Junior Taylor Fitch spearheaded the Redhawk offense, ending the day with three hits in three at bats. Two of the three hits went for extra bases. The third baseman also came through for a score while collecting her 49th RBI of the year. Including Fitch, four Redhawks recorded doubles in the contest.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn led the team with 3 RBI, recording two hits in four at bats. Senior Nicola Simpson also joined Wehn and Fitch with multiple hits in the contest. She recorded two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Four more Redhawks recorded hits on the night, highlighted by freshman Abbie Fales sending out her third home run of the season for 2 RBI. Sophomore Sophia Kissling extended her tournament hitting streak to four games after picking up a base hit. Sophomore Mikee Morris recorded a double and scored a run, while senior Tai Wilson scored two runs while also knocking out a double.
Of the eight runs scored, freshman Zoe Hopkins and senior KJ Hopfer both tallied runs as pinch runners.
Sophomore Karen Spadafora led the defensive charge with five putouts, while Wehn added an additional four. Morris paced the team with three assists.
Leading from the circle was senior Nicola Simpson, who appeared for 3.1 innings of the contest. She faced 21 batters while striking out two. Sophomore Berkley Vance came in for 2.2 innings. She faced 15 batters and struck out two.
Seattle U struck first to open the evening, capitalizing on a walk and a double from Fitch. Wehn collected the RBI off a ground out to score Wilson from third. Utah Valley responded with its first lead of the night, scoring two off of three hits before Morris and Fitch locked up the final out.
Both teams were held scoreless through the second and third frames. Simpson picked up her first strikeout in that time span. The Redhawks struck again in the top of the fourth with Simpson leading off the inning with a base hit. Hopfer entered the contest to run for Simpson. Facing two outs, Fales entered the batter's box and blasted out her 2 RBI homer out of left field to retake the lead 3-2. Vance entered in the bottom of the fourth and guided the Redhawks to a 1-2-3 inning.
Seattle U built up its lead in the top of the fifth after Fitch recorded her second double facing one out. An RBI single from Wehn would score Fitch from second. Hopkins entered to run for Wehn before Simpson scored Hopkins with her RBI double. Vance faced four batters in the bottom of the fifth and picked up a strikeout.
The Redhawks pushed their lead further in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on two Wolverine errors. Kissling reached before Morris advanced her to third after doubling down the left line. Wilson would reach first off a Utah Valley error, allowing Kissling to score. The left fielder would steal her 11th base of the season to put two runners in scoring position for Fitch.
Fitch singled up the middle and advanced to second on the throw as Morris came in to score from third. Wehn kept runners moving, scoring Wilson off her RBI single before Utah Valley shut down the inning. Seattle U led by as many as five before Utah Valley dug deep and rallied back from behind to take the one run lead after the sixth, capitalizing on five walks and four hits.
Facing a similar predicament the night before, the Redhawks got a runner on following a Utah Valley error. Fales moved into scoring position off a wild pitch but the two out magic would end in the top of the seventh as Utah Valley's upset bid took down the Redhawks 9-8.
The Redhawks conclude the 2025 season with a 28-25 record and a semifinals berth in their final WAC Tournament. They enter the offseason preparing for the upcoming transition into the West Coast Conference on July 1.
