SEATTLE - Seattle U softball (22-14, 7-4 WAC) found itself in two defensive battles with California Baptist (17-21, 5-6 WAC) in Friday's doubleheader, but would ultimately concede both games to the Lancers by a run, 1-0 to open the day and 2-1 in game two at Logan Field.
The Redhawks combined for ten hits between both contests while holding the Lancers scoreless for a total of 12 innings. Both teams recorded 21 putouts in both games and committed no errors.
Senior Tai Wilson and sophomores Avari Morris and Sophia Kissling each recorded hits in game one. Graduate Jasmine Wehn led the Redhawks with five putouts. Sophomore Berkley Vance earned the start from the circle to open the day, pitching all 7.0 innings. She faced 30 batters and struck out two of them, only allowing eight hits and a run.
Game one opened with four scoreless innings between the Redhawks and Lancers, none willing to yield an opening to score. In game one, SU would strand eight Lancers to CBU's seven. CBU broke through in the top of the fifth behind three hits and a walk to score the lone run of the game to take game one 1-0.
Shortly after, the Redhawks strung together a stronger offensive showing, grabbing seven hits and a run in game two, but a two RBI homer from CBU in the top of the first proved to be the winning hit from the start.
Five Redhawks recorded hits in game two, with Wehn and Morris both accounting for two hits. Wehn collected her tenth double of the season, the lone Redhawk to go for extra bases on the day. Her RBI single drew up the lone score for SU on the day. Junior Taylor Fitch, freshman Camryn Johnson and Kissling rounded out the group with hits. Wehn led the defense with seven putouts.
Leading from the circle and pitching all 7.0 innings was Morris. She faced 32 batters and struck out three of them, allowing six hits and two runs.
CBU struck immediately in game two with a two RBI home run out of center field before being held scoreless through the final six frames. Seattle U broke through in the bottom of the third to score its lone run. Wilson reached first after she was hit by a pitch. She promptly stole second to move within scoring position before capitalizing on a base hit to right field by Wehn. Wilson leads the team and the WAC in runs, now up to 35 on the season.
The Redhawks return to Logan Field tomorrow morning at 11 AM to host CBU for the series finale.
