SEATTLE - Seattle U softball gears up for a pivotal conference series in Phoenix, as the Redhawks (23-14, 8-4 WAC) take on current WAC leader Grand Canyon (30-6, 9-2 WAC) for three games at GCU Softball Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
Sophomore Avari Morris leads the Redhawks with a .485 batting average, recording 32 hits in 66 at bats. The dual threat is also a pivotal piece for SU in the circle. She's pitched for 58.0 innings holding a 3.98 ERA while handing out 50 strikeouts.
Leading the team from the circle is senior Nicola Simpson, who ranks third in the WAC in strikeouts with 76. She's pitched for 88.1 innings holding a 1.90 ERA after 16 appearances, which ranks 39th in the country. Simpson, alongside Morris, poses a dual threat, batting .327 on the season to rank fourth on the team. She has accounted for 35 hits and 22 RBI in 107 at bats.
Simpson leads the team with eight wins on the season, but right behind is sophomore Berkley Vance. She collected her seventh win of the season against California Baptist in the series finale. She has pitched 71.2 innings on the season while delivering 52 strikeouts in a team leading 17 appearances. Vance holds a 2.83 on the season thus far.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn paces the team with 41 hits on the season. She holds a .323 batting average while ranking second in the WAC with 12 doubles. Wehn is second on the team with 33 RBI and leads all Redhawks defensively with 238 putouts.
Senior Tai Wilson sits first in the WAC with 37 runs on the season. The left fielder has 40 hits this season. Also with 40 hits is junior Taylor Fitch. Fitch leads the Redhawks with 36 RBI, which ranks tied-106th in the country. She holds a .328 batting average and leads all Redhawks with nine home runs, which ranks tied-119th in the nation.
As a unit, the Redhawks rank second in the nation in doubles, averaging 2.03 a contest. Their 321 hits rank tied-51st in the country, while their collective .308 batting average ranks 66th. With 190 RBIs, Seattle U is tied-70th in the nation. The Redhawk defense also ranks high, with a combined 3.14 ERA sitting 62nd and strikeouts per 7.0 innings (5.41) ranks 82nd in the country.
Together the defense holds its opponents to a .259 batting average, only allowing 256 hits, 134 RBI and 151 runs through 37 games. Seattle U has garnered a total of 191 strikeouts while its opponents have collected 146.
Conversely, GCU hits a combined .350 batting average to lead the WAC. The Lopes have accounted for 321 hits and 232 runs this season, while holding a combined 1.81 ERA. As a unit, they have struck out 185 batters while allowing 317 hits.
The Redhawks trail the all-time series against Grand Canyon, holding 14 wins to the Lopes' 25 dating back to their first meeting in 2005. Seattle U last defeated the Lopes in Seattle a season ago by a score of 5-2 in the series finale at Logan Field. The Redhawks are 9-12 in Phoenix, last defeating GCU on the road in 2021.
