SEATTLE - Enjoying a four game winning streak, Seattle U softball (14-9, 3-0 WAC) completed the conference sweep of Abilene Christian (4-19, 0-3 WAC) in a come from behind victory at Logan Field on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Karen Spadafora paved the way for the Redhawk offense, tallying a home run batting .359, while in tandem pacing the defense with nine putouts and catching a runner stealing. Her nine putouts matched a career high and she matched a season high two assists on the day.
Senior Tai Wilson led the team with two hits, including a triple, and a run, batting .319 on the day. Junior Taylor Fitch paced the team with 2 RBI, recording a hit, and four assists, to match a season high in assists.
Freshman Camryn Johnson and sophomore Avari Morris accounted for the final two of the six hits tallied in game three against the Wildcats. Johnson would also record a run in one at bat.
Grabbing the start from the circle was senior Nicola Simpson. She pitched 6.0 innings and faced 29 batters, striking out six for the second day in a row. Sophomore Berkley Vance came in at the top of the seventh and faced four batters, striking out two of them to help guide the Redhawks to victory.
Similar to the doubleheader games, both teams took a defensive stance through the opening two innings, stranding two runners a piece. Abilene Christian broke through first at the top of the third behind a 2 RBI single. The Wildcats built up to their largest lead by adding an additional run in the top of the fourth, homering out of Logan Field.
Spadafora responded in kind in the bottom of the fifth, stepping up to send out her fourth home run of the season to get the Redhawks on the board. Johnson and Wilson put runners in scoring position with a single and bunt single respectively. Fitch collected her 2 RBI to draw the pair in behind a single to left center to even the score 3-all.
Simpson struck out her sixth batter in the top of the sixth, stranding a Wildcat runner. The Redhawks were also held from scoring in the sixth before Vance entered in the top of the seventh. With one runner on, the Redhawks sent down the final three batters, including two strikeouts for Vance.
Wilson recorded her triple in the bottom of the seventh before Fitch was walked. With two Redhawks on base, Wehn put the ball into play and an overthrow at home allowed Wilson to score the go-ahead to ice the contest 4-3 and secure the series sweep of the Wildcats.
Seattle U improves to 3-0 at home on the season while locking up all three wins of its first WAC series of the year. The Redhawks return to action next weekend, traveling to Utah Tech for their second conference series. They return home for a meeting with Oregon on March 17 at Logan Field.
