SEATTLE - Seattle U softball (13-9, 2-0 WAC) collected its first home wins of the season, defeating Abilene Christian (4-18, 0-2 WAC) 3-1 then 7-0 in a doubleheader on Friday evening at Logan Field to start league play 2-0.
The Redhawks combined for 18 hits and 10 runs across both games while holding the Wildcats to one run and four hits to improve to 5-1 in the all-time series against ACU.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn and sophomore Avari Morris led the Redhawks in game one, tallying two hits a piece. Morris led the way with 2 RBI while fellow sophomore Karen Spadafora grabbed an RBI and a hit. Six Redhawks accounted for the eight hits in the win, while Wehn and freshmen pinch runners Zoe Hopkins and Camryn Johnson all accounted for the three runs.
Leading from the circle in game one was senior Nicola Simpson, who pitched her seventh complete game for her fifth win of the season. In 7.0 innings, she faced 32 batters and struck out six to move to 62 strikeouts on the season, while only allowing three hits and a run.
Aiding Simpson and the Redhawk defense was Wehn, who paced the team with eight putouts, and Spadafora, who accounted for an additional six putouts. As a unit, the Redhawk defense left 10 Wildcats stranded on base over the course of game one.
Both teams went on the defensive to open the day, neither allowing the other to score in the opening two innings. ACU broke through first behind a home run at the top of the third. The run would prove to be the lone score for the Wildcats on the day as the Redhawks held them scoreless through the remainder of the evening.
Back-to-back singles came at the bottom of the fourth for the Redhawks to get runners on, facing one out. Sophomore Avari Morris stepped up to the plate facing two outs with senior KJ Hopfer and Hopkins on first and second respectively to nail a RBI single through the right side to even the game at 1-apiece.
SU would get the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth after a RBI double from Spadafora drew in Wehn for the score. With its first lead of the day, Seattle U drafted up another run behind an RBI single from Morris to exit the sixth inning up 3-1. In the top of the seventh and one Wildcat on base, Simpson struck out her sixth batter before junior Taylor Fitch grabbed the final out to cement the 3-1 victory for the Redhawks.
In game two, the Redhawk offense got hot, posting 10 hits and seven runs to defeat the Wildcats 7-0. The defense locked up its third shutout of the season while stranding 12 Wildcat runners.
All nine batters recorded at least a hit in the second winning effort of the day at Logan Field. Fitch paced the team with two hits, including a 2 RBI home run, her sixth homer of the season. Spadafora also picked up an additional 2 RBI for the Redhawks with a double. Both sophomores Sophia Kissling and Avari Morris recorded triples on the evening, with Morris collecting the RBI. Freshman Abbie Fales and senior Tai Wilson accounted for the final 2 RBI of the seven total in game two.
Wehn and Fales combined for 13 putouts as Fales grabbed six to go for a new career high in a Redhawk uniform. Sophomore Mikee Morris led the charge with three assists while orchestrating two double plays in the shutout.
Leading from the circle was sophomore Avari Morris. She pitched through her second complete game of the season while securing her fourth win of the year in 7.0 innings to match a career high in innings pitched. Coming off her no-hitter, Morris faced 26 batters and struck out four of them, only allowing one hit and no runs.
Once again facing a stalemate with honed defense, the Redhawks went on the offensive to break through in the bottom of the third inning scoring five runs. Kissling got on board first after leading off the inning with a triple. Facing one out, Wilson drew in Kissling for the score before Fitch homered down the left line, putting the Redhawks up 3-0. Wehn got on with a double and Simpson was walked before Spadafora picked up the 2 RBI double to push SU up 5-0 at the end of the third.
Morris struck out a batter before Mikee Morris and Wehn completed the double play in the top of the fourth. After striking out and stranding another runner at the top of the sixth, Seattle U returned for another burst of offense as Simpson got to second to lead off. Avari Morris tallied her triple to bring in pinch runner Hopfer before Fales scored her fellow freshman Johnson to move the Redhawk lead to seven.
ACU got their lone hit of game two in the sixth inning but Morris and the defense retired the last two batters. With one final push to get on board, ACU was downed by the Redhawks in the seventh with two outs from Fales and Hopfer to complete the day one sweep with a 7-0 shutout in game two.
The Redhawks return tomorrow to conclude the three game series against the Wildcats with first pitch slated for 1:00 PM at Logan Field.
