SEATTLE - A 10-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter made it a four point game late for Seattle U women's basketball (3-25, 0-15 WAC), but the comeback fell short as Southern Utah (9-20, 7-9 WAC) stifled the surging Redhawks 61-55 on Thursday night at the Redhawk Center.
Redshirt sophomore Olivia Moore paced the Redhawks with 15 points, connecting on 3-of-6 shots from behind the arc. She picked up a new career high in steals, collecting four of the seven recorded by SU on the night. Moore added two assists and four rebounds while ending the night shooting 54.5 percent from the field.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe contributed another double digit scoring affair, securing 13 points for the Redhawks in 31 minutes of action. She shot 55.5 percent from the floor and went a perfect 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Edokpaigbe also handed out two assists and picked up four rebounds.
Redshirt junior Tamia Strickling paced the Redhawks with eight rebounds, while graduate Christeina Bryan posted an additional six and led the team with three offensive boards. The pair combined for ten points and each shot perfectly from the line. Stricklin paced the Redhawks with four assists, one shy of her career high.
Senior Julianna Walker locked up three of SU's six triples on the evening, shooting 33.3 percent from behind the arc.
The Redhawks combined for 26 points in the paint while scoring 16 points off SUU turnovers. They went 7-of-7 from the free throw line, the second time this season shooting perfect from the charity stripe. Seattle U conversely held the Thunderbirds to five triples on the night.
Both teams traded runs at the start of the contest, as a 6-0 run produced from Moore and Bryan evened the game early in the first quarter. The Thunderbirds went up by five with 1:38 left in the first before Edokpaigbe and graduate Taisiya Kozlova pulled the Redhawks within one, 13-12, at the end of the opening ten minutes.
A triple from Moore at the start of the second gave the Redhawks their first lead before a 4-0 run by Edokpaigbe gave SU its largest lead at the 7:46 mark. A scoring drought plagued the Redhawks into the half as the Thunderbirds led by eight, 33-25 at the break.
Southern Utah built its largest lead in the third quarter, but a 5-1 run by the Redhawks closed the gap to trail 53-39 at the end of thirty minutes. Moore pushed the gap closer with her own 5-0 run at the start of the fourth. Walker followed suit, hitting from deep before Bryan knocked down a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to four, but the Thunderbirds responded in kind, pushing back the lead to double digits to secure the win 66-51 over the Redhawks.
Seattle U returns for its final home contest of the year on Saturday afternoon as the Redhawks host Utah Tech for their senior day at the Redhawk Center at 1 PM.
