)SEATTLE - Seattle U softball (21-10, 6-0 WAC) eclipsed an 11 game winning streak after downing Cal Poly 6-5 in the doubleheader opener before the Mustangs (5-24), struck back to take game two 2-1 at Logan Field on Wednesday afternoon.
Sophomore Karen Spadafora led the Redhawks with a 3 RBI homer, accounting for one the hit in three at bats. Graduate Jasmine Wehn once again guided the Redhawks to victory late, recording two hits and 2 RBI in four at bats, scoring a run while hitting one of three doubles in game one.
Sophomore Mikee Morris also went for extra bases with a double along with junior Brooklyn Jones. Nine separate Redhawks recorded hits, while all six runs came from different Redhawks. Senior Nicola Simpson was accredited an RBI and a hit in three at bats.
Simpson got the start from the circle and collected her eighth win of the season after pitching for 4.1 innings. She faced 19 batters while striking out one, allowing only a hit and a run, which was unearned. Senior Naomi Chaidez came in for the remaining 2.2 innings and faced 17 batters, while allowing three hits and four runs.
Despite another high hitting affair for the Redhawks, their defense allowed multiple opportunities for the Mustangs to stay in the contest. Cal Poly struck first after two errors and two walks before senior KJ Hopfer locked up the final out in the top of the first.
Morris and senior Tai Wilson started the day with back-to-back hits for the Redhawks, Morris leading off with a double. After Wilson stole second, Wehn grounded out to allow Morris to score. Simpson followed with her RBI single to secure the early lead 2-1.
The Redhawks immediately sent down the next three Cal Poly batters before being shut out in the second inning. They left a runner on after a grab from sophomore Sophia Kissling in center field in the top of the third before Spadafora gave SU its largest lead with her eighth home run of the season. Her 3 RBI homer out of left field scored both Wehn and junior Taylor Fitch to put SU ahead 5-1.
Cal Poly struck back hard in the top of the sixth, scoring three runs off of two more Redhawk errors. The Mustangs sent down the Redhawks' next three batters and evened the score behind an RBI single in the top of the seventh. With Fitch walked to lead off the seventh, pinch runner freshman Zoe Hopkins came in as Wehn came up. She doubled out to left center as Hopkins came in for the score from first to ice the game 6-5 in favor of Seattle U.
After a weather delay in the first game, the teams returned within half an hour of the Redhawks win for game two.
Kissling led the Redhawks with two hits in three at bats, while Simpson paced the team with an RBI and hit. Both Wilson and Wehn each recorded doubles in the 2-1 loss to Cal Poly.
Sophomore Avari Morris earned the start in game two. She appeared for 4.0 innings and faced 15 batters. She struck out five of them before sophomore Berkley Vance entered for the remaining 3.0 innings. Vance also faced out 15 batters and struck out one.
After a multitude of errors in game one, the Redhawks cleaned up defensively, but were unable to flex their usual offensive might. They were held to six hits and one run.
A pitching duel led to five scoreless innings between the Redhawks and Mustangs before Cal Poly broke through first for two runs in the top of the sixth off two doubles and a sacrifice fly. In response Wehn doubled to get into scoring position before Simpson rattled off another RBI single to score Wehn to pull within a run. Hopkins moved to third as a pinch runner for the potential game tying run but the Redhawks were sent down leaving her stranded.
After two Mustangs were left on in the top of the seventh, freshman Camryn Johnson doubled leading off for one final push to keep the winning streak alive. Jones advanced Johnson with a successful sacrifice bunt but Cal Poly shut the door on Seattle U sending down the final two batters to take game two 2-1.
Seattle U returns to action on Friday as the Redhawks take on Tarleton State for a three game series, starting with a doubleheader. They return to Logan Field the first weekend of April for Little League Weekend against California Baptist.
