SEATTLE - With just two weekends left in the regular season, the Seattle University Redhawks head to Phoenix for matches against Utah Tech and Grand Canyon. The Redhawks will play both of those matches on Grand Canyon's campus. Seattle U plays Utah Tech on March 27 at 2:00 pm and Grand Canyon on March 28 at 9:00 am.
This will be the first action for the Redhawks since Lamija Avdic earned her first career WAC Singles Player of the Week award. Avdic went undefeated last time out of the Redhawks, with two unfinished doubles matches, an unfinished singles match, and a singles win in matches against Saint Mary's and Sacramento State.
Avdic is the first Redhawk since Elena Kravela last March to earn WAC Singles Player of the Week. She had already earned WAC Doubles Player of the Week this season, alongside Liliya Dimova when that duo became the first-ever Redhawks to qualify for ITA Conference Masters during the fall season.
The Redhawks split their two matches against Utah Tech and Grand Canyon last year. Both were tight matches: Seattle U beat Utah Tech 4-3 to end the regular season and fell 3-4 to Grand Canyon earlier in March, with both of those matches in Seattle. Lola Tavcar earned doubles wins in both matches: alongside Dimova against Utah Tech and alongside Avdic against Grand Canyon. Dimova also won both her doubles matches, while Jade Quintana earned a doubles win against Grand Canyon.
In singles play, Avdic had wins in both matches, including a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win against Utah Tech. Tavcar and Dimova each earned wins against Utah Tech, with Dimova's win sealing the overall match victory.
Overall, the Redhawks are 3-1 against Utah Tech, winning their last three matches in a row over the Trailblazers. Those two teams have met each of the last four years. Seattle U has not earned a win over Grand Canyon, with their first matchup coming in 2014.
After this weekend, the Redhawks will have just one dual match left before the WAC Tournament: against Eastern Washington, at home on April 6. The WAC Tournament will begin April 17 in Arlington, Texas.
