PHOENIX - Sophomore Karen Spadafora recorded her third home run of the season and second in as many games to propel Seattle U softball (11-9) past Utah State (12-8) 3-1 at GCU Softball Stadium on Sunday morning.
Spadafora was one of two Redhawks with two hits on the day, posting two RBI and a run in addition to her two hits, batting .348 on the day. Sophomore Avari Morris was the second, batting .469 in three at bats, recording two hits.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn posted a .324 batting average, recording a double, a run and an RBI in three at bats. She also paced the team defensively, collecting nine putouts on the day. Spadafora aided the defense adding seven putouts of the team's 21 on the day.
Leading from the circle and collecting her fourth win of the season was senior Nicola Simpson. She pitched all 7.0 innings and faced 30 batters. She struck out six of them, including three in the seventh inning, while only allowing five hits and a run.
After a defensive battle in their first meeting, the Redhawks and Aggies picked right back up where they left off. Neither team wanted to concede the first run and the first inning went by in quick succession. Simpson retired three more batters at the top of the second before the Redhawks struck offensively in the second.
Wehn, facing a 2-2 count, connected for a double out to left center to move to scoring position in the bottom of the second. Facing one out, Spadafora took her fifth pitch and exploded for her third homer of the year out to left field to draw in Wehn for 2 RBI. Morris followed up with a single before Utah State retired the final two Redhawks.
The Aggies got two runners in scoring position at the top of the third before Simpson pitched her way out with the assistance of the Redhawk defense to keep Utah State scoreless. Sophomore Mikee Morris got on base in the bottom of the third after a double before senior Tai Wilson was walked. Junior Taylor Fitch got up next and advanced the duo after grounding out. Wehn followed suit for the RBI to bring in Morris for the score to make it 3-0 in favor of Seattle U.
Utah State got on board in the top of the fifth to cut into Seattle U's lead, but a double play in the sixth and three strikeouts in the seventh would cement the rematch victory for the Redhawks 3-1.
Seattle U debuts at home on March 7 to host its first conference series of the season. The Redhawks welcome Abilene Christian for three games at Logan Field with a doubleheader on Friday evening before concluding the series on Saturday afternoon.
