PHOENIX - An 8-0 run out the gate from Seattle U women's basketball (3-24, 0-14 WAC) ended with an eventual 82-52 defeat to the WAC's regular season champion Grand Canyon (27-2, 14-0 WAC) at GCU Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman Candy Edokpaigbe extended her streak as the team's leading scorer to five straight games after tallying 13 points to lead all Redhawks. She shot 6-of-9 from the field, while picking up six rebounds including five offensive boards.
Redshirt junior Tamia Stricklin scored 12 for her 11th double-digit scoring game of the season. She hit two makes from behind the arc, shooting 50 percent from deep, while ending the day going 4-of-9 from the floor. Stricklin picked up five rebounds and tied a career high in steals with three.
Graduate Christeina Bryan also netted 12 points for the Redhawks, shooting 40 percent from the floor. She scored four from the charity stripe and paced the team with seven rebounds and two blocks. Bryan also picked up two steals.
Redshirt sophomore Sheridan Liggett added another eight points, knocking down two of the five threes seen on the afternoon. She paced the team with three assists and picked up five rebounds to tie a season high.
Scoring five points to match her season high going a perfect 2-for-2 from the field was freshman Lucy Larson in 11 minutes of action.
The Redhawks paced the Lopes with 33 rebounds to their 29, including 12 offensive boards to their nine. Both teams scored 24 points in the paint and paced one another with 14 second chance points. Their respective benches produced nearly identical results with SU's reserves scoring 25 to GCU's 27.
Seattle U opened the game on an 8-0 run as the Lopes struggled to produce a basket for almost the entire first quarter. Grand Canyon would not take the lead away from the Redhawks until under a minute remained in the opening ten minutes. Stricklin kicked off the afternoon with a triple after the Redhawks forced a turnover.
Edokpaigbe and Liggett got the Redhawks their largest lead through the middle of the first quarter before GCU got a basket to take the lead 11-8 after the first. The Lopes shook off the early bout of cold shooting and the Redhawks struggled to keep pace, taking the 33-18 deficit into the half. The Lopes continued to press on the Redhawks in the closing twenty minutes to ice the contest 82-52.
Seattle U returns home for its final two conference games of the season, hosting both Southern Utah and Utah Tech at the Redhawk Center next weekend.
