ARLINGTON, Texas - In back-to-back weeks, sophomore pitcher Avari Morris claimed the Jersey Mike's A Sub Above Western Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week honor following another shutout victory over the weekend, as announced by the league this afternoon.
Morris pitched all 7.0 innings in the 7-0 victory over Abilene Christian in game two of Friday's doubleheader, which tied her career high innings pitched. In the third overall shutout win for the Redhawks this season, Morris' win was her second shutout of the year as she commanded the defense from the circle. She faced 26 batters and struck out four of them, only allowing one hit and no runs.
After pitching a no-hitter in five innings a week ago in Arizona, Morris took to the circle in her lone appearance on the weekend and continued right where she left off. Morris did not allow a hit through the first five innings of the contest before the Wildcats recorded their lone hit of the game in the sixth. The win was Morris' fourth this season.
The effort aided the Redhawks in the series sweep of Abilene Christian as SU moved to 7-1 all-time against the Wildcats. Seattle U improved to a four game winning streak following the weekend, while in tandem starting a three-game home winning streak.
The Redhawks travel for their second WAC series this weekend, making the trip to Utah Tech for three games starting Friday, March 14 before returning home to host Oregon on Monday, March 17 for their Mental Health Awareness game.
