SEATTLE - Recently ranked in the DI Softball Mid-Major Top-25, Seattle U softball (11-9, 0-0 WAC) debuts at home for the first time this season to host a three-game series against Abilene Christian (4-16, 0-0 WAC) starting March 7 with a doubleheader at Logan Field at 3 PM.
The Redhawks come off another 3-2 weekend, defeating UTEP, Yale and Utah State at the ASU/GCU Invitational to improve to 11-9 on the season. Sophomore Avari Morris highlighted the trip to Arizona tossing the program's sixth no-hitter, defeating Yale in 5 innings, 9-0, to become the fifth Redhawk to record such a feat. The effort locked up the team's third weekly conference award of the season, as she took home the WAC's Pitcher of the Week for the week of March 3.
Graduate Jasmine Wehn paces the Redhawk offense with 22 hits on the year, accruing a .324 batting average in 20 appearances. The first baseman has the fifth most runs (9), second most RBI (18) and third most doubles (6) on the team. On the defensive side, she leads all Redhawks with 138 putouts, which ranks second in the WAC.
Junior Taylor Fitch leads the team with 22 RBI and five home runs. The third baseman has 19 hits on the season, while accounting for 32 assists to rank second on the team. Her 22 RBI ranks tied-63rd in the nation after four weeks, while ranking first in the WAC.
Sophomore Mikee Morris ranks tied-42nd in the nation with 45 assists, which paces the team and ranks second in the conference. Morris ranks top-five on the team in hits (19), doubles (5) and runs scored (16).
Senior Tai Wilson and sophomore Karen Spadafora combine for 42 hits on the season, with Wilson pacing the team with 19 runs scored in 20 games. The pair both rank top-five on the team in batting average with Spadafora posting a .333 and Wilson a .300 after four weeks. Spadafora has caught four runners stealing on the year while ranking second on the team with 109 putouts.
As a unit, the Redhawk offense ranks sixth in the country in doubles per game, averaging 2.15 a game for a total of 43. Their 164 hits rank tied 67th in the nation. SU also cracks the top-100 teams with 13 or more home runs on the season, while taking tied 77th with 98 RBI.
Leading from the circle is senior Nicola Simpson. She holds a 1.87 ERA after 10 appearances. She has struck out 56 batters, which ranks second in the WAC while pacing the team with four wins and 60.0 total innings pitched. She has pitched six complete games on the year while holding opponents to a .235 batting average. Her 56 strikeouts is ranked 38th in the country.
Sophomores Berkley Vance and Avari Morris account for a combined six wins for the Redhawks from the circle. Vance ranks second to Simpson with 32.0 innings pitched, while Morris ranks second on the team with 21 strikeouts. Morris has pitched 28.1 innings on the year, while joining Simpson as one of two pitchers with a shoutout recorded on the season.
Together, the Redhawks hold a combined 3.74 ERA while holding their opponents to a .267 batting average. They have struck out 103 batters in 20 games, while their 5.4 strikeouts per seven inning games ranks 84th in the country.
Seattle U hosts Abilene Christian for its first conference series of the year. The two teams have met a total of four times with the Redhawks holding the series edge 3-1. This weekend's games are the first ever held in Seattle as the pair have only ever met in Abilene, Texas or on a neutral field. The Wildcats are 1-3 on the road this season with the bulk of their wins coming on a neutral field.
