STANFORD, Calif. - Seattle U softball (1-3) collected its first win of the season after splitting its second day of contests between No. 22 Stanford (3-0) and Pacific (0-4), bouncing back from a 17-7 defeat to the Cardinal with a fiery 9-3 victory over the Tigers at Stanford Stadium.
Junior Taylor Fitch shined after capping the day with a pair of home runs and a double for a combined five RBI. Her three run homer against the Cardinal kicked off the day for the Redhawks before she returned with another blast for a two run home run against the Tigers, while also tacking on a double in that contest. The Preseason All-WAC selection ended the day with three hits, five RBI and two runs in seven at bats.
Freshman Abbie Fales made impact statements in both games in her collegiate debut. She recorded her first collegiate hit with a two RBI double against the Cardinal. The effort pulled the Redhawks within five runs after a seven run second inning by the Cardinal. The freshman then turned around and delivered her second RBI double of the day in her first collegiate start against the Tigers.
Seven different Redhawks recorded runs against the Cardinal after Stanford allowed only two in their first meeting. Fitch brought in sophomore Mikee Morris and senior Tai Wilson in the top of the first with her home run facing a 3-2 count and zero outs. The Redhawks would strike again in the fourth inning, scoring four runs.
Fales' double allowed for senior Nicola Simpson and graduate Jasmine Wehn to come in to make it 10-5 with SU facing two outs. A subsequent Cardinal error gave Fales and sophomore Karen Spadafora time to tack on two more runs to make it 10-7 in the fourth. Stanford responded with an additional six runs to ice the game 17-7.
Wehn paced the defense against Stanford, recording four putouts. Morris followed suit with three, while junior KJ Hopfer led the team with two assists. Sophomore Avari Morris got the starting nod against the Cardinal from the circle, pitching for 1.1 innings and facing 16 batters. Senior Naomi Chaidez came in for the remainder 2.2 innings, facing 21 batters and striking out two.
Shortly after wrapping up their second game of the weekend against Stanford, the Redhawks prepared to go toe-to-toe with Pacific as both teams sought their first win of the season. The Tigers got on the board first before Seattle U responded in kind with an RBI single from Simpson to bring in Wilson for the score. Sophomore Sophia Kissling took full advantage of a Tiger error as Mikee Morris stole second in the bottom of the second, scoring the go ahead run to take the lead 2-1.
Fales knocked out her RBI double to draw in Spadafora in the third before Fitch produced her two run home run that brought in Mikee Morris in the fourth for extra insurance. Wilson recorded her ninth career triple in the bottom of the fifth, tacking on two RBI to her scorecard after Kissling and Hopfer came in for the score. Fitch followed in turn with an RBI double to bring in Wilson to make it 8-3 in favor of the Redhawks. Fales set up the final score of the evening, as a sacrifice bunt allowed for fellow freshman Camryn Johnson to come in to ice the game 9-3.
Wehn once again led the defensive charge, collecting 10 putouts. Hopfer, after reaching a career best in assists yesterday, broke through to a new career high, recording four assists against the Tigers. Mikee Morris followed suit with three assists of her own and three putouts.
Sophomore Berkley Vance grabbed her first win from the circle after pitching all 7.0 innings against the Tigers. She faced 32 batters and struck out two, while only allowing six hits and three runs. The effort lowered her ERA to 3.89 on the season to lead all Redhawk pitchers.
Seattle U scored at least one run in each inning against the Tigers, the first time doing so since they bested Southern Utah in five innings in 2023. Despite that feat, Saturday's win against Pacific was the first time in the D-I era that a Redhawk team has scored a run in every inning across a complete seven inning contest. The Redhawks combined for 16 hits, 16 runs and 13 RBI on the day.
One more game remains for the Redhawks in the Stanford Invitational as they prepare to take on Fresno State on Sunday at 10 AM PT at Stanford Stadium.
