STANFORD, Calif. - Seattle U softball found itself in two tight contests during opening day at the Stanford Invitational as both opponents narrowly eluded the Redhawks (0-2) on Friday afternoon with Long Beach State (2-0) taking game one 7-6 and No. 22 Stanford (1-0) taking game two 5-2 at Stanford Stadium.

Senior Tai Wilson led the charge against the Beach, recording two hits, two runs and an RBI in three at bats for a .667 batting average. She ended with three total hits on day while grabbing one of the two recorded hits in game two against Stanford. Sophomore Karen Spadafora notched two hits against LBSU to match Wilson, while scoring a run in Seattle U's fruitful sixth inning that pulled the Redhawks within a score.

Five Redhawks in total scored against the Beach, including Wilson and Spadafora. Graduate Jasmine Wehn and Spadafora each tallied a run after LBSU walked two Redhawk batters at the top of the sixth, while freshman Camryn Johnson recorded her first collegiate run off of Wilson's second hit of the afternoon.

Johnson, Wehn and junior Taylor Fitch all grabbed their first hits of the season in game one, with Johnson's hit being her first in a Seattle U uniform. The freshman loaded up the bases in the top of the sixth to help unleash the floodgates as the Redhawks collected three runs and three hits in their formulated comeback that came up just short.

Defensively, Wehn led the Redhawks in putouts in back-to-back showings with six putouts against the Beach before turning around and collecting seven against the Cardinal. Sophomore Mikee Morris, after leading the WAC in assists a season ago, tallied six total assists on the day, posting three a game.

Junior KJ Hopfer went for a career high three assists against Long Beach State, while grabbing another against Stanford. She combined for four putouts on the day, including two sensational catches in the first and third innings against the Cardinal.

Sophomore Avari Morris got the start from the circle in both contests. She pitched 4.0 innings against Long Beach State, facing 25 batters, striking out four, while allowing seven hits and five runs. Sophomore Berkley Vance came in for the final 2.0 innings, going up against 13 batters, striking out one, while allowing three hits and two runs.

Seattle U went for nine hits and no errors to kick off the year against Long Beach State, their third time opening a season in five years without an error.

After another delayed start from residual delays due to rain, the Redhawks took a crack at No. 22 Stanford. Wehn guided the Redhawks with a double and 2 RBI in the first inning against a Stanford squad that made the NCAA tournament field a season ago, drawing in both Fitch and senior Nicola Simpson for the score. Simpson took to the circle for the Redhawks in game two, pitching all 6.0 innings. She faced 34 batters and struck out three, while keeping the Cardinal scoreless through four innings.

Seattle U returns to Stanford Stadium tomorrow afternoon, revisiting Stanford at 3:00 PM PT before taking on future conference mate Pacific at 5:30 PM PT. Live stream is available for the first game of the day against Stanford.
