SEATTLE – Against one of the nation's top teams in steals per game and turnovers forced, Seattle U men's basketball matched a season low in giveaways and Tarleton State managed just four steals as the Redhawks dominated every faucet of the game in a 91-54 win Thursday night at the Redhawk Center.
The Western Athletic Conference win snapped a three-game skid for Seattle U, as it moved to 9-13 on the season and an even 4-4 in league play. The Texans (10-14, 5-4 WAC) had a two-game win streak snapped in one of their most lopsided losses of the season.
Ten total Redhawks scored in the game as Seattle U shot 57% from the field and 60% (15-of-25) from three. John Christofilis finished with 19 to lead a quartet of players in double figures. Brayden Maldonado went 6-of-8 from three for 18 points, DaSean Stevens added 16 points and Matthew-Alexander Moncrieffe chipped in 10 points in limited action.
Tarleton State got 22 points from Keitenn Bristow while Bubu Benjamin added 19, but no other Texan would score more than five points on the night.
The Texans scored first in the game, but a 19-2 Seattle U run followed, forcing a Tarleton State called timeout at the 13:06 mark. Seattle U maintained a double-digit lead for the duration of the frame and carried a 48-29 advantage into the break.
The second half was more of the same as the Redhawks opened with a 12-0 run, ballooning the lead to 31, 60-29. The would use a 14-0 run to complete a 26-2 advantage over a nine-minute span in the second half, leading 74-31 with 11:12 to play and effectively putting the game away.
Seattle U completes the two-game homestand on Saturday, hosting UT Arlington at 5 p.m. in the Redhawk Center. The game will broadcast live on ESPN+.
